| [attr="class","boldclass"] "This is harrrd. I don't want to learn to fight anymore. Please let me go." Akaren closed her eyes and ignored the complaints of the kricketot. The bug-type had seemed nervous from the start, only relaxing slightly when he saw his trainer for the day. Apparently, he thought she looked kind, and might give him some slack. He was going to be sorely dissapointed. While she confessed training newbies wasn't the greatest thing in life, she wasn't going to shirk her duty. Besides, having the talent to train a recruit well was a skill worth having in the military, and if she could prove her talent to her captain, or even the general, if he wishes to inquire more into this, then it would be a great boon to her career. "No." She said stubbornly, eyes fluttering open to glare at the kricketot. "The Trainer's Respite isn't even hard. You signed up for the military, you'll have to deal with fighting."She backed away slowly while facing the bug-type, who cowered lower, if possible. She resisted the urge to give a sneer. The recruit seemed the type to exaggerate everything he saw, and if possible, she did not want bad rumours about her circulating amongst others. If his friends were all as irritating as he was, she wouldn't have to worry, but every word has a chance of passing onto more important people. "What if someone attacks us?" He asks, glancing left or right. The petilil frowned. Frankly, his cowardly behaviour was far more likely to attract others looking for a weak pokemon to beat up. "You'll be fine with me." The petilil said, getting into a defensive position, signally for the kricketot to do the same, the bug obeying slowly. "Attack me." She ordered, prompting a surprised look from the kricketot. "... I don't want you injured!" The pokemon protested. "I'm not going to get hurt permanently." The petilil explained patiently. "You're not strong enough yet, and it's not like I haven't had an injury or two before. I'll go to a healer afterwards. For now, though, personally experiencing what you can do is the best way for me to work out your capabilities. Come on now."Kricktot level ? Used struggle bug! Almost timidly, the Kricketot tensed, preparing for an attack, then sprang at the petilil, sending her stumbling backwards. She was stronger in battle than the bug-type, bur Akaren had never been one for physical strength. She recovered soon enough, as the bug type immediately ceased his attack when Akaren was almost knocked over. Pain flared in several places, but faded away soon. She might have a few bruises, but was otherwise fine. "That was pathetic." She replied bluntly to the Kricketot, who opened his mouth to protest. "Yes, you did well enough, considering you're less practiced than I am, but our type has a natural weakness to such attacks. How well do you think you'll do against sturdier pokemon?" The kricketot shut his mouth, looking scared. Perhaps her words were at fault. Perhaps it was the predatory glint in her eyes. "Now, let's get on to serious training."

"Become Stronger" "Don't fight me, go fight ferals" "Ferals live far from the capital" "Don't go so far again!" the voices of the different pokemon that instructed her rang in her head. She was a bit irritated, to say the least. She had been instructed to grow in her skills of combat, but she was not allowed to spar with just any pokemon. She could fight ferals, but they did not live within the capital's walls. She had gone to where the ferals were located, only to be scolded for going so far from the capital limits. What was a Null to do in order to keep herself from becoming...obsolete?
Luckily, she had managed to come across a kinder soul that gave her the suggestion to check out Explorer's Respite. Well, "Kind" in Kala's definition was a bit different from the average pokemon's. The pokemon had berated her for not knowing of the dungeon, as it was only common sense that this was the best place to begin.
So, here she was. She had no idea that this was supposedly a hotspot for beginners, but she had passed this place by many times. The grass tickled her as it brushed against her body. She had to look down to make certain she was not about to step on some unfortunate soul. It would not do for her to return to her master with a dead caterpie. She was certain Indria would have been furious if the soul was not feral, she was certain of it!
She stopped though, voices had been heard not too far away. She froze to the spot as she heard some rather terrified cries. Was someone in danger? Was she needed? Her first thought jumped to what she had been made to do: Protection. She bolted towards the scene, the armor that hindered her weighted down and clanked as if to announce her presence. The cries were not something worthy of such a reaction from her, but she was in search of any reason to "protect". If she could protect, then she could practice. If she could practice, then she could train.
She approached the scene to see...nothing.
What?
She was fairly certain she had heard voices over here along with a rather distressed tone, where had they gone? It took a moment for her to notice the small clearing of grass the battle took place in, as it resided within a blind spot produced by the helm that hindered her. She tilted her head slightly to the side as she finally spied the petilil and the kriketot. Who were these two? She did not recognize them. Who was in distress? The Petilil appeared to be damaged, while the kriketot appeared to be panicked.
The self-appointed "Hero" was confused, but that was not going to stop her from the opportunity that had presented itself to her. "What's going on here?" she demanded.

| [attr="class","boldclass"]"We'll start with your pathetic attacking skills."
She wasn't quite sure how to approach this. She felt the urge to correct the kricketot's attacking skills, but would have preferred to avoid harming herself. Some things couldn't be avoided, it seemed. At least she could restore herself somewhat, if she managed to fit in a "mock fight" to leech some energy. Just enough so both of them were relatively healthy. Maybe. That was toeing certain lines she'd not like to cross.
Maybe if she found a few fer-
The appearance of a type:null sent the kricketot into a panic, a squeak actually emitting from his mouth - if it was her, she would be mortified, and even giving Akaren the pause.
"What's going on here?"
Oddly enough, the Null took a few seconds to say anything. She wasn't sure what that meant, but before she could muster a reply, the kricketot was overcome with fear and decided to answer.
"T-training!" He squeaked, earning him an imagined dirty glare from Akaren, who instead took the time to calm down a little and compose herself.
"Indeed." She said loftily, assuming a standing position rather than retaining the fighting position she was once in. Besides being hard to maintain, it was also rather undignified. Despite being shorter than the four-legged normal type, she still attempted to look intimidating. More than attempted to. She was rather irritated, since the pokemon had interrupted her.
On the other hand, she had managed to make the kricketot rather nervous, and a glance at the pokemon told her that while he had been deciding whether he was happy the session was interrupted, or frightened that there was a type:null in the same clearing he was in, he had now settled for confused. Which was a rather amusing sight, especially since she had long since decided she didn't like the kricketot.
"I am under orders of General Electabuzz to help this trainee here," she nodded at the kricketot. "To improve his skills as a combatant."
She really wished she could get back to it soon. She had a good idea of what to teach, and was almost beginning to enjoy herself. Teaching might be a backup plan, then, if her current career did not work out, and she still wished to complete her great grandmother's challenge. Which of course she wanted to. A teacher probably wasn't what her grandmother had meant, bur maybe a skilled professor...
She very carefully removed her thoughts from her grandmother. She wasn't sad, but it made her prone to stuttering nervously. That would be embarrassing.
"And your task here is?"
She was almost confident that the Null had no task here. She was merely thinking of ways to return to the subject at hand. She throughly disliked being interrupted.

The fearful bug had been surprised by her arrival, though she was a bit oblivious to idea that she was possibly the one to be the cause of fear. The fearful kriketot squeaked an answer to her, though the petilil was displeased with it. She was a bit...conflicted. The petilil agreed with the bug, but that did not help Kala's case. If they were training, why did the kriketot look so fearful? Why did the petilil look so angry?
The petilil spoke up with a gesture to the kriketot as she explained herself. Kala listened as the green little pokemon informed her that they were here under the orders of General Electabuzz to improve the skill of the small bug type.
Kala knew of the electric pokemon. She was not a direct part of Invictus's militia, she was only connected as a Bodyguard for her master, but she had seen the electabuzz around town. The null studied the two before her before her directive was put into question.
She stood straight and tall suddenly as she spoke in response, "I am also here to train. I was told to make some improvements upon my strength in order to assist in the protection and guarding of Indria Indris of Invictus. I am in search of a feral to practice battle against. I thought I had heard a distressed cry and thought that there might have been a feral around here. It appears I may be wrong." She attempted to explain herself thoroughly. She knew she needed to be careful with her words around strangers. Indria had always told her to never tell her true age to another pokemon. She had always wondered why, but she never dared to break her mistress's order.
After all, if she were to be disobedient, then she would be obsolete. She would be useless, unworthy of being allowed to continue. Those who worked under Indria to create her had been sure to let her know that one step out of line could be her downfall. While this was not necessarily true, as Kala had messed up countless times before and nothing but a scolding had come of it, she still believed it.
Oh, that's right, there was one question she needed to ask the petilil still. "Why?" She requested. It was a question she probably should have asked before she gave the answer, but it was better late than never. She had not a clue that it was only fair since she had arrived onto the scene and demanded the very same, for her definition of 'fair' was quite different from the average pokemon's.

| [attr="class","boldclass"]Keeping her attention spread between two pokemon was hard, she found out. There was the bug-type, who had mostly calmed down by now, but still was her charge. And there was the Null, of course, who was infinitely more interesting, but also not what she was here to do.
Akaren gave a frown at the Null's explanation. If that was true, it meant that the pokemon would have good reason to be here, under orders of a similarly important character. Good reason to stick with them, even. While she wasn't keen on the idea of someone else taking up the task of the trainer - or even sharing it, she had to admit, if the other pokemon decided to stick around, it meant she didn't have to do as much of the hard parts, such as getting hit.
She wasn't much of a manipulative pokemon, however, so that plan had dozens of ways to fail, she was sure. Maybe as a backup, then, since she wasn't even sure if she wanted the Null to stay.
Besides, she was rather irritated that apparently, the pokemon had thought that one of them was a feral. While she admitted the kricketot was rather nervous about the whole thing, she certainly wasn't the one who cried out... which made her to feral, even if the other pokemon didn't expect it to be her, even if it was a mistaken belief.
"You will find that neither of us is a feral. Fortunately." She said, voice brittle. "Though I suppose we could offer training, if you wish to join us." She gave the kricketot a stiff glare, now addressing the bug-type.
"You don't have any problems with that, do you?"
A shake of the head indicated that no, the kricketot did not have any problems with the decision. Or that no, he didn't want the Null to join them. She wasn't sure, but she didn't need to kricketot's approval, except superficially.
Ignoring the kricketot, Akaren answered the Null's question whole posture changing slightly to reflect the stance she learned as a trainee, and had since then ignored, though it did change her normal stance somewhat. Rather annoyingly, it was unappealing. "As a fully graduated member of the milita, it is my duty to educate those trainees that have been underperforming in any way I can."
Immediately afterwards, she consciously relaxed her unconsciously chosen position. Formality was something she disliked having. It made conversation far less straightforward.
Basically, he's being a big whiny baby, and I'm here to teach him to grow up."

The petilil confirmed once more that neither of them were feral, before she offered for Kala to join her and the little kriketot in training. The kriketot seemed on board with it, at least in Kala's eyes. Her expression if it were visible under the mask that obscured her true head, changed to one of delight. She was being invited to join them! Surely this was by no means of some obligation and this was a genuine invite she could not possibly refuse!
"I'd love to join you two!" she chirped in a happier and less "official", as she puts it, tone. The petilil had said something that had bemused her slightly, however, as the grass type took on a more forward approach to what the task at hand was. The happy expression twisted to one of confusion that reflected itself more in the tilt of her large head as she looked down at the two small creatures before her.
The grass type had said she needed to teach the kriketot to "Grow Up", but Kala had never heard of such a lesson. She had heard the term "grow up" before, but what she knew was simply a natural process of a maturing body of an average pokemon. How could they possibly teach a pokemon to "grow up" if that came naturally whether a pokemon wanted to or not? Did she need to learn to "Grow Up"?
"How...do you teach someone to 'Grow Up'?" she asked, "Can you teach me?" she asked, a bit worried that she may have missed an important lesson of some sort. Kala adjusted her own posture to be a bit more relaxed rather than stiff and attentive. She wanted to make herself look less intimidating, seeing as these two seemed to be fairly kind if they were willing to let someone like herself join in on their session.

| [attr="class","boldclass"]Her words seemed to make the kricketot incensed, for some reason. She couldn't understand why. No, really. It wasn't as if she hadn't been rude before, and the kricketot had been more intimidated than angered. Maybe she had touched a nerve, or maybe it was because there was now someone else present. Well, it made the bug grow a spine, which was rather impressive. She was rather happy, since if the kricketot's natural personality was that meek, he wouldn't survive long in any career.
"I am not a crybaby!" He yelled, causing the petilil to wince. Maybe she had overestimated just how much she could push the kricketot. A stern glance served to squash whatever resistance the kricketot gathered. "You're just being rude." He muttered rebelliously.
"Maybe I am." She agreed cheerfully. Turning to the Type:Null, she raised an eye at her query. "By saying that he needs to grow up, I am implying that his brain development has not caught up, lacking in control that is essential in life. Childish, in essence."
It was rather odd that the pokemon had not managed to pick up that particular phrase in her life. Though she had to remember that they were in essence, constructs, and had no intuition for such things. And possibly no way to learn such things, with them being ostracised by society.
She herself was uncertain of what to think of these creations, though she fully trusted the science that brought them to life and held them whole, she was also suspicious of new things. But they were sentient, and had minds of their own. For now, she would pronounce them innocent until proven guilty.
"It's not something you can be taught, since it differs from person to person. You'll learn it as you age." She shot the creature a curious glance. How old was the null, anyways?
""I'm here to teach the kricketot how to fight so he doesn't run away at the first sign of danger." The kricketot to grumbling under his breath again, which she chose not to listen to. "In his case, he needs to stop being a coward."
She gave a small bow, stance suddenly combative.
"Get ready." She barked at the kricketot, who didn't seem inclined to move, happy to be sidelined.
"I'm Akaren, and that bug is Ekhet. If you're willing to show us what you can do, we will be starting soon."

The small bug type stood up for himself, though Kala was still just plain bemused at the time. The bug had declared that he was, in fact, not a crybaby and that the plant was just being rude. Rude? Kala was often told that she was rude, mostly by the scientists back at Indria's place when she first came around to the lab. She had always persisted in asking plenty of questions and some seemed to have hit a few sensitive subjects. So from what she could gather on "Rude" was that the petilil had offended the kriketot, or in Kala's terms "made them feel really really bad."
Fortunately for her, the petilil explained what she had meant to accomplish by teaching the Kriketot to "Grow Up" and spoke of the development of the brain. But...wasn't that something that developed naturally as well? "Growth" could be taught? This term, "Childish" it was another she was quite familiar with. It was another label the researchers had often placed on her, along with many strangers. So...was this Kriketot basically like her? The answer was "No, not at all" but she did not have the opportunity to ask the question as the petilil went on to explain herself more. It seemed that the true thing being taught around here was combat. The ears underneath her mask flicked slightly as something she understood more wholely came into the subject.
The petilil moved to make a more aggressive looking stance. Kala's muscles tensed in response, but she did nothing as the grass type poke. Oh, were they going to begin?
She took on a more combative stance of her own as she spoke, "I would gladly show you my strength. What is our first lesson?" She looked between the kriketot and the petilil, unsure of who the first spar partner was going to be. She was not about to attack without given express permission, as she had learned from example that such an action could be taken horribly wrong.

| [attr="class","boldclass"]The petilil shifted positions slightly, placing her as the furthest corner of the triangle the three formed. While she was the teacher, it would not be ideal to get personally involved. Not if she wanted to avoid getting hurt.
The Type:Null accepted her tutelage, granting her another student in addition to the kricketot. Both were rather immature, though at least the type:null had a reason for it. How many interactions with other pokemon did they usually receive? Weren't they typically used as soldiers? On the other hand, this one was free-roaming. She should have had more experience with pokemon, if it was at least... when did the type:nulls stop being produced?
Now, what were they doing before the type:null joined them? The artificial pokemon"s question had reminded the petilil that she was here to teach, not just fight. The kricketot looked at her anxiously, perhaps worried that class was finally going to start.
"Attacking." She said out loud, remembering her curriculum for the session. "We'll work on key weak spots of certain pokemon, the effectiveness of certain attacks against certain pokemon."
That was why she had wanted to gauge the Kricketot's abilities. It was a good way to see where the bug-type knew already, and to be aware of any glaring weaknesses. Though it wasn't pleasant, it was necessary. And can't all things in life be described this way?
"Which is why you're going to attack me."
Honestly, that wasn't the best way to do this. If she had let Ekhet defend, then he could learn something as well as allowing her to avoid getting hurt. She didn't enjoy gaining new cuts and bruises, in addition to the usual ones she accumulate from training, though as a plant, she tends to heal them faster than usual pokemon. Her mother could regrow torn leaves in little more than a day, although the flower on her head required much more attention.
"Pay attention." She warned the kricketot. "You'll be sparring partners with ms..." She realised that she still did not know the type:null's name, halfway into the sentence, trailing off awkwardly before starting again confidently. "And it would be prudent to study her attacking style before you face her."
She hoped she was making the right calls. Her task was to teach, and to prevent her students from getting into danger, say, if a feral pokemon decided to attack. Although the chances of being attacked were slightly smaller, now that there were three pokemon here. Most ferals were cowards, after all. On the other hand, if the type:null happened to be strong enough to take her down, she would be the liability instead of the protector. That would be very bad.

It never really occurred to Kala that she should introduce herself. Names were not what was important right then, what WAS important was the fact that the petilil had targeted herself as Kala's sparring partner. However, the Type:Null did not exactly wait for the Petilil to finish speaking. She had been given her target along with permission and she was ready to roll!
From what she knew of combat so far, it was imperative to use any sort of advantage she could get. She needed to act quickly and neutralize the target as swiftly as possible. Orders were to kill any aggressors, but she knew enough to not apply that order to this situation. This was a practice fight, not a real one. Since this was a practice battle, she would not aim for the end of the opposing life and merely to just pin them down and put them into a position where she could end it all if she wanted to.
The type:null's muscles tensed up before she pounced forward to attack the Petilil in a display of very little restraint as she trusted her judgment that the petilil surely must have been stronger than she. She said nothing as she moved in for the attack, announcing one's presence in the midst of an attack was dangerous and not much of a sneak attack.
Her emotions flared as she felt herself grow heated, the attack known as Rage took effect even if she were successful in the hit or not. If the petilil were to attack her, her strength would only rise.

| [attr="class","boldclass"]The Type:Null started moving before her last words had dropped from her mouth. It she was less experienced, she would have frozen on the spot. The petilil was not known for being able to improvise at a moment's notice.
Fortunately for her, training took over her mind, a cool voice noting that she had not enough time to dodge out of the way, instead bracing herself in order to best recover from the attack. She was already in a defensive position before, and only had to adjust slightly. She wasn't happy that she had been caught somewhat by surprise, but she couldn't say that it was a bad tactic.
Now she extended her roots down into the ground, even as the full brunt of the null's rage threatened to tear her from the ground. A few tendrils were all she needed, the earth's nutrients and the sun's warm rays encouraging her growth, and grow she did. Not larger, by any means, but certainly there was a new strength in her leaves.
Her newfound strength made it easier for her to hold her ground, her roots quickly retracting back to her, a couple that could not do so withering. It did not matter. Right now, what she needed most was mobility. She didn't want to sustain another hit like that if she had to. Akaren was frail physically compared to the type:null, she could tell that much, but she had other ways of mitigate the damage.

She had struck the petilil, but the grass type did not strike back. Instead, the pokemon had conducted a move Kala still was not familiar with. The type:null was not familiar with biding one's time to grow stronger, as she was far more inclined to deal as much damage as she could as immediately as she could whether she had been harmed in the midst or not.
Kala did not even bother to back away and access the situation in order to figure out what the creature was doing, as she instead swiped her claw at the petilil in an attempt to knock it over. She was much slower than the smaller creature, so it likely would have been easy to just back away from the attack. Kala unconsciously made up for this with unrelenting attempts to assault the petilil as much as she could in a Rage attack that dared the Petilil to strike her. The mask proved to hinder her greatly as she would have struggled to see the petilil if it moved around into blind spots.
She would have cursed the mask, but she did not know of any life without it. She did not know what it would have been like to fight without the armor that held her back.
She remained silent, not interested in small talk during a fight such as this. She was focused and in the zone, but whether or not that "zone" was good was a different story.

| [attr="class","boldclass"]The Type:null's attack were strong. She managed to avoid one raking claw, whirling around and around in a defensive pose, but another whacked her, leaving a light green gouge on the petilil's body. It stung, slightly, as her body tried to knit it together, only to find most of her energy spent on moving around the type:null's attacks. She held her ground, although it was a close thing, her newly found strength made it easier for Akaren to stand, rather than stumble to the ground.
Arceus take her if it didn't hurt, though. Another paw connected, and the petilil decided to back off a little. It wasn't as if she was a melee attacker, anyhow. She worked better away from the frontline.
Once far away enough, she stopped moving for a short while. That was why she needed to move away, so that the type:null couldn't rain down hits while she was still, even for a short while.
Moment's later, a trio of leech seeds sprung out from her leaves, nothing but a tenuous, almost metaphorical line linking her to the seeds. Rather than aimed high in the air, the seeds were almost at the petilil's height, trading unnecessary distance for speed, aimed with surprising precision, at the type:null.
Wherever they landed, whether on the other pokemon or the ground, they would start growing rapidly, vines and roots bursting out of the seed to seek another living body to absorb energy from. They weren't particularly powerful or useful, and would wilt soon without proper rooting or nutrients, but the link that connected them to the petilil would pass that leeched energy to the grass-type.

Once again she felt the thrill of success as she had made a scratch on the opponent. Her body eagerly awaited to be struck back and utilize the pain to produce power, but the petilil appeared to be more cautious than that. The petilil was too fast for the Type:Null as she had backed away far enough to pause and perform another move. Kala was all too eager to charge right towards the grass type in a manner akin to a bull as her head lowered to smash into the petilil.
Her direct charge led to the certain connection of the seeds to her body as each planted themselves on her chest. Her talons dug into the dirt as she forced herself into a full on stop.
"What did you do?" she demanded even though the foe would likely not tell her as long green and brown tendrils sprouted from the seeds and began to wrap around her body. The null was completely distracted by the new problem that had presented itself to her as she felt an odd sting wherever the roots had touched her. Kala gave an angered cry that seemed akin to some sort of bark as she spent energy on the action of trying to tear the seeds off with her insect-like claws.
She failed, quite obviously, as the seeds merely increased in their growth the more she had struggled. The Null had wasted a few valuable seconds that would have left her vulnerable to any attack the petilil might have in mind whether it be physical or yet another status affliction that would have eventually led to her downfall for underestimating. If she were not incapacitated by then, she would have turned to attack the petilil once more with a newfound fury as her blood began to boil.
She would have begun to become lost in the fight as she would forget that this was practice. The primary directive in her genes began to resurface that demanded that she show this pesky annoyance who was truly powerful in physical combat.

| [attr="class","boldclass"]The vines wrapped themselves around the charging type:null, stopping her in the middle of her charge. It was amusing, but the petilil had no time in this battle. It may have only been a practice round or two, but she would give it her all.
Her wounds hurt, somewhat, and she moved from one position to another. There was the sting wherever she accidentally tore the fragile skin that surrounded the wounds further, and then there was the dull pain when the tissue tried to heal. She ignored them all. She could not let anger or fear cloud her mind, and she could certainly not let some pain stop her.
She could feel the energy sapped from null reach her, speeding up the mending of her wounds until a few began to close properly, and waited for a moment, until they were good enough that she would no longer tear them apart while moving. She felt better for a while, but that pause gave the opposing pokemon enough time to land a hit on her. She hadn't expected the type:null to be fast enough - she had chosen to rest now because she had seen the other pokemon struggle with her vines - but fortunately for her, nothing new was broken.
"Anger." She said through gritted teeth. "Is not becoming on you." Perhaps her half-taunting reply was not particularly helpful, but she doubted it would take too long for her to end this, and she needed not fear the type:null's anger. She had shown what she wanted to show, and now knew plenty on the other pokemon's fighting style. She staggered backwards from the null's rage, but not before almost gingerly touching the null's skin, one leaf glowing faintly, once again draining the null's energy. She wasn't sure if it was pleasant, or if anyone would notice being on the receiving end of mega drain , but she decided not to take the risk of the type:null realising, and instead danced out of the way of the other pokemon. She felt somewhat better from all her rapid healing, though not all of the damage was mitigated.
Not that it mattered. She would end this soon.
