Explorer's Respite, the rookie grounds, the easy dungeon, there were quite a few names for the grassy domain but Samantha knew it as one name, her hunting grounds. Even now she scurried through the grass, her golden horn sticking up through the almost suffocating grass, so tall that even standing on two legs she knew her head would barely break through the foliage. Not that she needed it, the prey she typically had her eyes on would usually tower over the grass anyway.
Today she was heading far further than usual, putting her instincts to the test as she wandered unknown lands. She remembered how her mother and father would dominant these grounds, feeding on whatever they pleased before getting bored and moving on to the dangerous dungeons their ferocious hearts desired...sometimes, when they were in a good mood, they'd let her eat what they caught. She chuckled, by now she was certain that she'd never take an offering of prey, it had to be hunted, to be slain by her claws.
Almost as if on cue, a shape started to move through the grass, shadowy and indistinct from such a distance. She froze, tail wagging slowly as she crept closer, pupils narrowing into slits. Her claws tore gouges into the first as she approached, and her tail flickered down into its smallest flame, leaving the grass around it untouched. Her mind was racing and it took all her self-control to not drool as the shadow got closer and closer, dripping with scent that told her it could very well be a Tarous, oh she could almost taste it!
...and yet, she forgot one important thing about dungeons, never let down your guard.
A long squawk caught her attention a split second before a harsh impact sent her sprawling, flattening the grass around her prone body and sparking into low-key fires as her tail flame shot up in alarm. Her prey was gone, that much was certain, the loud bellows and thumping of hooves telling her all she needed to know. Her eyes shot open, blazing red as fire drooled from her jaws, "Who...did that?" Her eyes rolled upward, and took in the feral Pokemon that had so rudely interrupted her hunt.
Spearow Level 10
Spearow Level 10
Two shapes flitted above her, one posing in a haughty fashion and looking on the verge of preening himself, the other flapping a bit higher with a more neutral expression. "See? You knock them over, and they're useless!" The first cawed triumphantly, feathers rising in an adrenaline rush, Samantha could already tell he had been the one to encourage this attack. Just like a Spearow, to find bravery in numbers. The second gave a noncommittal grunt before lowering his wings and diving straight for Samantha, claws glowing with a dark energy she recognized as Pursuit. So she couldn't run, well these two were certainly no meal, but even a snack was appreciated.
She coughed upward, spitting a Smokescreen right into the Spearow's face, and he came down a near feet away. Immediately Samantha lunged, but was met with a feathery blindness as the second furious bird dived into her head, pecking into her thick horn. She gave our a loud cry and coughed again, fire swirling out of her throat with this exhale. A shriek filled her ears, and a twisted grin crossed her features as the smell of burnt feathers filled the air. The second bird was already on his feet as his partner retreated, twitching and coughing soot out of his face. The two birds took to the skies again and circled threatningly, shouting jeers and taunts down to the beast that burned off some of their tail feathers. Samantha stayed perfectly silent, trembling with fury as she bared her fangs back at them. The thrill of battle was consuming her, and she prayed that soon these fronds of grass would be as scarlet as her eyes.
Another strike, Samantha saw it coming a mile away, and scrambled out of the way. What she didn't see coming was the other Spearow swoop in with Leering eyes, Peck at the ready. Again, she twirled out of the way, grimacing as she felt the surprisingly sharp beak graze her side, brushing against her ribs. She could smell the metallic blood, feel the heat of her body boil it off her scales. At the same time pain registered in her mind, her arm shot to the side and caught the Spearow's wing, sending it into the ground hard enough to leave a small crater.
The second Spearow dived in again, and pulled up short as Samantha released a long bellow, her variation of a Growl. While it hesitated, she suddenly aimed downward and snorted out a gout of smoke, concealing herself for a precious few seconds. Another roar echoed from the swirling smokescreen and fire jumped out of the black, colliding with the flapping Spearow, who had decided to try and pounce on the hidden Samantha. She bounded on all fours toward the falling figure, instinctively knowing she could tear the thing apart while it write down on the ground. The plan went about as well as could be expected against two opponents. Under a Smokescreen it probably would have worked, but her blind run did not go unnoticed. She got only a caw of warning before a Pursuit struck her straight on, drawing and actual wound across her back. The Spearow, deed done, attempted to regain it's lost air, one wing flapping drunkenly. Samantha snarled at the cheap shot, head twisting back to sniff at her back, noting in the back of her mind that it was not a superficial wound, she'd have to be careful.
More fire, heating her scales to an unrelenting heat that rolled off her body, sprang from her throat. The falling Spearow twitched back into a more flight worthy position, "G-get her!" He barked uselessly, prompting his injured partner to launch an attack, listing to the side as more dark energy enveloped his claws. Samantha hoped they didn't expect her to run, considering that the other stopped around her side, rumbling out a growl that would have been terrifying had she not been five times their size before springing for her. She jumped right for them, and judging by the way their eyes widened, this was the one response they had not been expecting.
One swipe of her claws sent one to the ground for the final time, red splattering across his feathers as he screamed a truly pained cry.
A breath of fire sent his partner silently after him, uselessly dragging a defiant claw across Samantha's snout before he allowed consciousness to leave him.
She had won.
Her tongue flickered out, lapping up the scarlet drops that dribbled down her face. It was salty. She hoped this snack was worth such injury. As she scooped up the first bird, she allowed herself to think yes, yes this was completely worth it. The feathers were a bit of a bother, but that could be dealt with, and brittle bird bones were always a treat.
However, while triumph ruled her mind in that moment, she couldn't shake the feeling more than just the Spearows had been watching her.
Samantha's snout was now caked in dried red. Had she been "normal", her bright red scales would have hidden the blood from view, but her yellow scales allowed the horrible sight to stand out like a sore thumb. In light of this, her tongue flicked out to drag across the metallic blood, slowly but surely exposing her scales. Her dubious meal was already pouring into her with energy, and she could see her scales get just a bit brighter. It still felt like there was a pit in her stomach, but now she felt like she could take down a Tauros with one claw behind her back, easy! Her head peeked over the edge of the grass, swiveling every which way and blinking at any movement, staring at moment to acertain it was just the wind before continuing on.
No big meals in sight.
Samantha grunted and snarled moodily as she settled back onto her front claws. Her tail flame, which had jumped up during the battle, shrunk back into its smallest incarnation. In a moment of insight, she swept her tail over the evidence of the fight, stomping over remnants of burnt grass and feathers. Immediately after, she started off in a completely different direction she had started her journey in, no point in making an obvious trail for feral Pokemon to follow her with.
Her nostrils twitched as she moved, trying to catch the tell-tale musk of a big, meaty Pokemon. Her mind didn't deviate much from the task at hand, and she ignored the smaller shadows around, so she missed the whispers around for quite a bit of time.
"Did you see her?"
"Yeah, she killed them!"
"And-and ate them!"
"The plain isn't going to be happy..."
"...And we always get the short end when the plain isn't happy..."
Samantha started to halt, mouth parted slightly as a horrific rumble leaked out of her chest. Her eyes tracked the two whispering shadows, which froze in response to her piercing gaze. One second later, one shadow disappeared with a whimper, tumbling away smelling all of fear and panic. Samantha tilted her head and laughed a harsh, mocking laugh, "Are you gonna run to, coward?" For a moment, there was no response save for a long, almost adorable growl. "No."
Eevee Level 10
Perhaps had the little beast not spoken, Samantha would have been hit by its incredibly quick attack, but instead she ducked and scrambled forward, turning to face her opponent. The Eevee had twisted their face back into a horrible attempt at bared teeth, dwarfed infinitely by Samantha's display, showing each and every fang in ghastly detail. Two Growls filled the air, loud enough to make the ground itself tremble as the two circled one another. Samantha was vastly bigger than the Eevee, but she refused to press the attack, a cornered Pokemon was the most dangerous after all.
It was difficult to make much sense of where you were going when your head just barely poked up above the tall ceiling of grass. Clyde snorted, his nostrils flaring and sending a small gust of hot air that played with the tips of the green plants. The Krokorok was a bit irritated, merely intending to gather some seeds, and possibly orbs, before leaving the fields but now he had gotten himself hopelessly lost. There didn't seem to be anyone around either, the air unmoving and quiet- until interrupted a minute later.
Clyde perked up at the sound of a sharp screech coming from the distance. Usually a noise like that meant 'stay away'. To the ground-and-dark type though, it read more along the lines of 'check it out, worst comes to worst all you have to do is beat some chump into the ground.' A slowly rolling slope, combined with the tall grasses hid the sight of whatever was going down so the Krokorok would just have to get closer.
He pushed forwards, hand idly fidgeting with a pouch hanging at his side that was attached to a sung rope tied around his waist. Whatever he could find, if anything, could be safely stored away in there. Coming across what appeared to be the place where the yell had sounded from resulted in nothing. There had definitely been a fight of some kind, the ground disturbed in a hectic manner. If Clyde had not the species born ability to see heat signatures, he would've been back at step one.
A trail of footprints was visible to him, cutting through the grass like it was curtain and the Krokorok followed without a second thought. It didn't take long for the noises of a rather short conversation to drift towards him and then abruptly transitioned into the cacophony of battle. Clyde usually didn't bother with being stealthy when making his way through wild areas but this time he decided to err on the side of caution. Skirting the edge of the spot where the strangers were fighting, and then stepping in when both parties were weakened seemed like a desirable plan.
Samantha didn't realize she had an unexpected audience to her battle at first, too focused on her immediate threat at the moment. The Eevee suddenly twitched in its panic and swept away paw at her, sending a wave of dirt into her face a split second before it rushed forward, screaming in a high voice that could be described as warrior-like. Samantha managed to shift her shoulder foward, taking the impact but digging her claws into the ground as she avoided falling over.
A gout of embers sprayed out over the Eevee, sending it skittering away whimpering in intelligible words, Samantha herself suffering a bright purple bruise roughly the size of the Eevee's head. Samantha charged, raising her claws up and bashing them down on the nearly cowering form of the Eevee before circling back, taking advantage of the flattened grass giving her some legroom. By now, a brief second of peace rewarded her with the distinct impression that she was being watched, and she instinctively shot a glance over her shoulder. Naturally, the Eevee launched at her, inexperienced but strong attack causing her to stumble away. Putting the stranger to the back of her mind, Samantha shrieked and scratched savagely as the beast drew near. To the Eevee's credit, it did not give up, using every leverage it got to slam it's head roughly into her ribs. Yet even determination didn't save it from eventually slowing it's struggles, and then passing out as its pain became too much to bear.
Samantha didn't bother killing it, seeing no point in the tiny little thing, and instead braced her claws against the ground as she sucked in whatever breath was getting through her bruised sides. Suddenly she inclined her head toward the grasses, "Thanks for helping out, jerk!" She spat.
As the violent chorus of battling eventually reached it's end, Clyde pondered whether he should just step out or take a more aggressive approach. He shifted his weight back and forth, from foot to foot, and didn't have to wait very long as the Charmeleon snapped out her displeasure about his presence. Being alerted that his presence was aware, the Korkorok made his decision and waded a few feet forwards through the grass, coming out upon the flattened area that had been filled with fighting just seconds earlier.
"Why would I help you?" He retorted, gaze scanning over the fire-type. He had thought he'd be lucky to find some good loot but the Pokemon in front of him certainly didn't look like she had anything. Hell, she was so lean it wouldn't have been hard to label her as malnourished. The observation of her vicious clashes said otherwise- unless out of pure desperation.
Still, there was no question that the stranger's loud and boisterous brawling would attract attention, it had grabbed his of course. While some of that attention might just be weaker, smaller Pokemon fleeing for their own self-preservation, there was no doubt it would allure the ferals who lived for the adrenaline rush of life and death situations. If the Charmeleon hadn't of Spoken, Clyde would've mistaken her for one of the wild inhabits of the fields.
"Not saying I wont," The Korkorok continued. "But what's in it for me?"
Samantha rolled her eyes and gave the crocodile Pokemon a baleful look, "Hmm...the satisfaction of helping a living being, good karma if you believe in that sort of thing..." She suddenly burst into a harsh peal of laughter, "You're not believing any of that, right?" She snickered, clearing her throat, "But seriously, you can take any loot you want, I'm not the type to take this stuff."
As if on cue, she scraped a furrow on the floor and fished up a Blast Seed before tossing it good-naturedly toward him, "See? Take it, and take whatever else you find, I'm not gonna need it." Throughout the whole exchange, she had a self-satisfied smirk on her face, but the offer seemed genuine enough.
Her head tilted as more bellows rode the wind, sounds traveling remarkably well in the clear air, "Welp...there were go!" Her lips twitched back, exposing her heated fangs, "Watch it, they're coming!"
Clyde snorted in response to the joke about providing assistance simply out of the goodness of his heart. Yeah, that wasn't happening. He watched as the Charmeleon pawed at the ground and then tensed as she unearthed the Blast Seed. The fire-type could've just thrown it at him with the intent to harm, but instead she tossed it for him to keep. Clyde caught it in his claws and pocketed it in the pouch by his side. They might need it soon anyways.
Samantha drew her attention to the deep calls of more feral Pokemon, these sounding much more larger and heavier in stature than the Eevee she had just taken on. The bellowing was followed by the sound of stomping hooves, too many blending together into an incoherent pattern to make out how many there were. After several seconds, the form of one Tauros broke the horizon line, coming up over the hill in front of the two.
Tauros Level 12
The Krokrok didn't need tempting as he easily positioned himself, ready to fight the raging bull that charged towards them. It's three trails whipped behind it angrily as it closed the distance between them. Clyde breathed in. One... two... Without a queue to the other Outlaw, he darted to the right, leaving Samantha in the wake of the raging Tauros as he worked to flank the beast and attack from behind.
So, she had a new partner, at least for today. Samantha found she was actually fine with this, the guy wasn't a rambling type, and there was no way in hell he was a military Pokemon. She lowered to the ground, tail flame bursting upward into an aggressive degree as the ground started to shake.
Her pupils widened as a Tauros crested a hill, barreling straight forward her. Her new partner raced to the side without so much as a word, and she couldn't help but to cough out a laugh, he definitely wasn't the helping type. She herself leapt to the side, and the Tauros whipped it's head roughly toward her. It was only a glancing blow and she still felt the horrible power behind it. She scrambled to the side, ducking under another wild swing of the head, and sprang for its side.
Immediately, she was thrown back and forth, digging her claws deeper and deeper before a shuddering buck sent her flying away. By now she had most definitely gotten it's attention, and she hoped her partner had something up his sleeves.
The Krokorok kept one eye on the Tauros and the other on the Charmeleon. Even if they were at a temporary truce, that in no way meant he would trust her, not to mention they'd have to not trip each other up. One wrong move and they'd both end up trampled beneath unforgiving hooves. Not to mention there were more coming, the muffled sound of a stampede still in the distance and only getting closer.
"What's the matter, having trouble with just one Tauros?" Clyde taunted, prematurely, as he observed Samantha's struggle with the beast. Darting forward as the normal-type was still focused on the other Outlaw, he opened his jaws wide and clamped them down upon the foe's hind leg. Sharp teeth dug into flesh and drew scarlet rivets from the wound. He tried to keep his Bite upon the feral Pokemon but a raging Tauros was not something to be toyed with.
Spinning around to try and catch sight of it's attacker, the normal-type bucked at the same time, dipping forward and sending it's back legs flailing into the air. The rush of energy and movement threw Clyde from the Pokemon, tumbling backwards and rolling through the grass a few times before he managed to stop and get himself upright.
Samantha grumbled to herself in a mocking way to herself before calling out in a more public voice, "Keep talking crook, I'll do the fighting!" She clamped her mouth shut as he went for a bite, trotting around the struggling beasts.
She hurriedly dropped to the ground as he was flung away, watching for a second as her current partner was flung away. A horrible bellow brought her back into reality and she crouched and unleashed a feral Growl right back, dissolving into an incoherent mess of snarling and roars as the Tauros charged right for her in a powerful Tackle.
Her heart leapt to her throat as it came faster than she had time to prepare for, manifesting in fire that lucked the sides of her face. She leapt right for it, screaming as it felt her stomach was squashed into her back but not losing sight on her intentions. Her Ember overflowed right onto the Tauros's back, filling the air with the smell of burnt flesh and fur. She spat one last gout of flame before springing away, slamming painfully on the ground but rolling away before she could be trampled by pain fueled hooves, "Get it!" She roared, "Take him out!"
Clyde watched as the Tauros smashed it's heavy form right into Samantha. He thought for a moment that she was done for, but then a burst of flames washed over the bull Pokemon's body. It let out a pained cry, not letting up in its raging state as it was worked further into a frenzy by the painful sting of fire. Still, the normal-type was weakened now, it would not take much to finally bring it down.
As the Charmeleon backed off and called towards him to initiate the finishing move, Clyde reacted quickly. Dashing towards the Tauros, his jaws opened once again. Sunlight gleamed off the dangerously sharp teeth inside his maw before they sank into the feral Pokemon's neck. The Krokorok's mouth was filled with the taste of burnt fur, fighting through the thick mane of brown fur before reaching skin.
The Tauros' legs buckled beneath it and it crashed to the ground, flattening the grass beneath it as a cloud of dust rose up from the weight of the impact. Clyde waited a moment, just to be sure that the Pokemon would remain unmoving, before removing his jaws from its motionless body.
Samantha flinched backwards as her kinda partner went in for the kill, quite literally in fact, she didn't pounce on the corpse immediately but she certainly felt like screaming in triumph. "Nice." She complimented, quiet enough so it was nearly whispered to herself, "You can take anything you find! I got what I want!"
If it was still unclear what she had wanted, her next actions would make it quite clear. As soon as the Krookidile stripped the beast of whatever he wanted, Samantha would lunge for the body, mouth agape. This was the meal she had been anticipating since she set foot in this dungeon, and she wasn't wasting a single precious bit of meat. As the drive for food started to die down, she slowed, cocking her head toward the crocodile Pokemon, "Say, what'cha doing here anyhow? Couldn't be here for the food, that's my job!"
Barely a second after Clyde had stepped back from the fallen Tauros, the Charmeleon leapt upon it like it was her life-line. He wrinkled his snout in a short display of disgust as the fire-type tore voraciously at the mammal's body. Maybe the only thing that did make this Pokemon different from the feral variety was the ability to communicate. Pulling his gaze away, the Krokorok looked to the distance where the sound of thunder rumbled yet the sky was clear of clouds.
"Yeah, I prefer to cook my meals first," Clyde replied with an offhanded comment. He didn't bother looking back to the other Outlaw. "I've got my own business out here," He continued. "I can come and go as I please."
Samantha definitely noticed the Krokorok's disgust at her eating habits, peering up at him for a long moment at his comment that he prefers to eat cooked food before shrugging and diving back into her meal. Cooked meat?...And risk attracting a bunch of Pokémon that'd love to have that meat? No thank you. She didn't voice this opinion, she didn't feel like getting into such a discussion with a near total stranger, it would promise a long conversation.
Instead, she chose to focus on his rather vague statement. He probably didn't want to talk of his life with her, understandable, it just made things easier on her. "Mm-hm, come on." She stated matter-of-factly, pawing at her snout for a second to clean up before darting off into the deeper grasses...as long as they were here, they might as well pick up something useful.
