There were many places to eat in the Capitol. There was a cafeteria or a restaurant on practically every street and back alley, if you knew where to look at least.
But one place was guaranteed to have what a pokemon was hankering for, and that was Restaurant Row. Situated, conveniently, not too far from Town Hall, but far enough to not be an 'eyesore' among the elite, was enough cooks and bakers to feed the entire community twice over. That is, if they weren't fighting for supremacy of the pallet day in and day out. Though rarely did a serious fight break out among cooks, competitions and dares were aplenty between the skillet skills and baking bravado of those that called this area home.
Among the rarest breeds of culinary artists were, of course, those that dealt in the most daring of ingredients. Meat. That which was both taboo and a delicacy, depending on your point of view. And among those in the Row that dealt in such a controversial cuisine was Ruthilo, the Scyther. With his small restaurant, self named of course, being in the less pretty part of the Row, it was sometimes a wonder he got business at all, especially considering the way he looked. But business he got indeed, for while he kept the dining establishment itself humble, his dishes more than made up for the lack of decor.
Today, he was working on his latest stew. Surprisingly, vegetables only this time. Sure, he knew he had a reputation for his meat dishes, but he did not shy away from working without it either. He enjoyed the challenge, actually, in getting some of his carnivorous clientele to try an all vegetarian dish.
Looking through the window of his kitchen into the dining area, he wondered how long it would be before the lunch rush hit the Row, and if his stew would attract any customers today.
"Hmmm...need to hire a waiter someday. Business picks up much more in the coming months, I won't be able to handle it alone anymore. No one else cooking in this kitchen, though. Not a chance."
He turned away and continued to monitor the still thickening concoction, his blades deftly moving spoon and lid with practiced precision. Some may think not having fingers would make this a chore, but when born without, one learns how to deal with life differently, and deftly at that. Balance was key, as was delicacy, for the Scyther Chef. Also, custom made notches in the right places didn't hurt.

It was lunchtime. For those that ate regularly, of course. Mesmer was the possessor of a voracious appetite, but usually subsisted on snacks and what remained of last night's fast food. Not a healthy menu, perhaps, but easy to procure, and he wasn't the fussy sort. Couldn't be too fussy, anyways, when he couldn't cook. It was only a friendly reminder that had caused him to step outside his workplace in the middle of the day on a working day. Most of the time, he went without lunch, and had a large dinner to make up for it, but today, some of his friends had decided to go out to eat. He declined their invitation, as he felt uncomfortable eating with so many others around him. Particularly because of his often messy eating habits. Instead, he had opted to find his own place to dine. Less embarrassing. Unfortunately, that meant straying a little further away from the center of the city, where he worked, to places that actually offered restaurants. Rather than, say, hotels and shopping centers. Which were all very well, but not what he was looking for. Especially since now that he had been made aware of it, he was felling rather hungry. The next street he took seemed to have a large number of people, crowding around to examine the many restaurants that were present in this street. Despite the claustrophobic-inducing crowd, he pushed through. There would be something here to suit his tastes, at least, given the number of restaurants. He wasn't aware of where, exactly, this was, since he had never been here before. While he had been a resident of the Invictus capital for a while, his knowledge on its geography was surprisingly poor. Though he would still be able to find his way back to his place of work, hopefully. He would retrace his steps, or ask a passerby. The city central wasn't hard to find. So he decided to explore the street a little. Find something that might suit his tastes better than just some random shop. The growling in his belly, however, proposed a different plan. And so, instead of carefully scrutinizing every restaurant, he decided to settle on the nearest establishment. It was only inside that he realised he had underestimated his unwillingness to talk to a stranger. "Er..." he managed, shifting nervously from left to right. He was unsure of what he was supposed to do, since it seemed too late for him to attempt a tactical retreat. He was already inside, after al, and it would seem rude to exit abruptly. Besides, his stomach firmly disagreed with any attempts of retreat.

Upon entry to the small establishment, the smell of the stew would be a welcome mat for any and all that had even a modicum of the sense to utilize. As for Mesmer, he didn't have to wait long for a greeting from the restaurant's only other current occupant. It's cook. "Welcome, welcome." His gruff, buzzing baritone bore itself through the kitchen window into the dining room, following the smell of the stew in it's warm beckoning of a good meal. A pair of doors next to the window soon opened to allow the large bug through. While his demeanor was certainly charming, his visage was not. The butcher's knives carved into his cheeks, as well as the red stains upon his blades and maw, spoke volumes of his career. Thankfully, his voice and mannerisms seemed to speak much more highly of his customer service. "Welcome to Ruthilo's! How can Ruthilo satisfy your appetite? Special today is a vegetable stew. Very hearty and filling! Please, choose any seat you wish. Ruthilo's may not look much, but it is comfy." He pointed at the few tables and booths in his small dining room. They did look comfortable, if drab. At least it was easy to see he kept everything clean and tidy. Not a dirty spot upon the chairs or tables to be seen. The floor itself might use a little sweeping, though. "If you have something else in mind, just tell Ruthilo, and he will do best to make for you, provided ingredients available. Only daily special made ahead of time. Ruthilo caters to all tastes." Here he winked, turning to return to the kitchen as he let his first lunch customer decide his dish, though not without another emphasis on his menu. "All...tastes." He vanished behind the doors, though from how easy it was to hear him moving about in the kitchen, there was no doubt he would be able to hear any orders made out loud. Mesmer

The Audino jumped slightly in place when he realised the Scyther's presence, blinking rapidly. The odd buzzing sound of his voice made him pause slightly before he realised the bug-type's words. It was actually rather interesting. Had he met any other bug types before? Were they also speaking in an odd tone? He would probably need to gather more data, since one individual was not a sign of a trend. Might be a dialect, or something. His sudden tangent of thoughts was interrupted suddenly by Scyther speaking once more, and it was only then that the pokemon had noticed the... odd colorings of the blades of the bug-type. The stains were... probably berry juice, he decided promptly before his mind had the time to wander off again. "Ok." He replied succinctly, recovering slightly from his previous nervousness. Not entirely, of course, since he was uncertain the brain could stop acting on adrenaline in that short a time, but he felt calmer. He picked a seat close to the window, gazing slightly outside to watch the passers-by for a moment, mesmerised by the passing crowd now that he wasn't part of it, before noticing a small child staring back at him, and hastily looking back at the Scyther. He hoped the other pokemon had not noticed his inattentiveness. Because he did listen! Really, he did. Maybe not particularly well, but he knew what the Scyther had said. Also, he had just realised that the bug's name was probably Ruthilo, given how many times he had repeated it, and felt slightly stupid for only noticing now. The Scyther emphasised the variety of dishes available, in a fashion that was slightly confusing to the Audino. He was being nice, and not creepy, right? He wasn't a good judge of these things, and could certainly not tell whether Ruthilo was being nice, or odd, or funny, without actually listening to his heartbeats. Which would be weird. "Ok." He repeated to the cook's back before he vanished into the kitchen. He fidgeted slightly, unsure of what to order. Though he did hope it could be ready soon, so... "The... er." He searched his memory, cursing himself slightly for not paying particular attention. "The, um, vegetable stew. I'll have that, please." He prevented himself from adding the 'I think' that was at the tip of his tongue. He didn't want to sound any more nervous than he seemed now.

The seat was impressively comfortable. Perhaps his lack of decor was because he put more effort into the feel rather than the looks of his establishment. In any case, he responded to the Audino's order with a quick reply. "It will be out in moment. Would you like anything on side with stew? Ruthilo made breadsticks this morning. Also have herb rolls and baked potato." Moments later, while he gave his customer time to deliberate on a side, the green saurian bug brought a bowl of his stew out to the table, delicately balanced on one blade, while the other balanced a napkin wrapped set of utensils. Not all mon used them, but he felt it was best to be prepared for all types. His motions were noticeably smooth and practiced, setting both of his charges down upon the surface before Mesmer with the stew hardly looking disturbed by the trip. The bowl, and the serving within, was large enough to fill a medium sized mon to bursting, and easily so. "Your stew. If need more, only ask. Ruthilo makes sure all leave with sated appetite." With the concoction now placed before him, the smell became stronger, and it was enticing. Visibly steaming, it looked like any other vegetable stew. Nothing appeared special about it, but if the smell was any indication, that appearance was deceptive. Not moments after the bowl was placed, the Scyther was gone. Much like the rest of his species, he was fast on his claws. He'd already seated another customer and was back in the kitchen in about the time it might take to cool the first spoonful of the stew. At least Mesmer already knew the cook/waiter could hear whatever was ordered from inside the kitchen. Mesmer

sum of its parts The Scyther's response was quick. He hadn't expected the speed, though his mouth was working on automatic now. Or on the whims of his growling belly. "The herb roll, please." He muttered, giving Ruthilo a nod of thanks as he stared at the table, which was, apparently, very interesting to the Audino. He was uncertain of how to speak to the Scyther, even more so than his usual 'I don't know how to talk' nervousness. He hoped it didn't show that much, but it was probably apparent to anyone observing him that... he apparently had a fear of eating food? There wasn't much to be afraid of in a restaurant, really. The cook brought out his dish in moments, laying the soup, sides, and utensils down in one smooth motion. "Thank you." He murmured before picking up a spoon, dipping it into the soup to taste the concoction. It was certainly better than his usual fares, though that wasn't much of a measure. He broke off a bit of the bread, dipping it into the soup before taking a bite. It was good. He really should eat out a lot more often, if that was what the city had to offer. The chef had already dashed away to seat another customer. He was fast, as all of his kind were fast. It would be nice to be speedy for once, rather than being always lagging behind. He continued dipping a little bit of the roll into the soup, eating it absentmindedly as the cook returned to the kitchen. "I won't need any more for now, but thank you for offering." He called out to the bug, ignoring the new customer and whatever look they might shoot him for calling out in a semi-public place. It was always polite to give his thanks.

"Is no problem. Dessert available with request as well. Ruthilo has berry pies and cookies ready to go. Anything else need time to make. Ruthilo apologize, but cannot deliver. Ruthilo alone, so cannot leave diner until close." The other occupant, a Fearow from the looks of it, made its own order, which was soon delivered as another bowl of the stew. The smell seemed to be working its magic on passers by, as the Audino might notice many looking towards the little restaurant, though upon sight a few seemed to shy away, while others acted a bit more...uppity. Some of the younger food seekers were often turned away from the place by their elders, likely parents. Without much noise as warning, the chef was next to the Audino, his buzzing voice sounding a little less chipper than before. His blades rested just on the edge of the table, his eyes looking out the winder with a hint of sorrow, though he the rest of himself with dignity still. "Ruthilo thanks you for joining him for lunch. Hopes you come back for more. But Ruthilo is honest, and wonders if you know of reputation...of reason many turn away from Ruthilo's." He tapped at the etchings in his cheek with the tip of his right blade, making a light 'tink' sound as he did so. The image of a butcher's blade was very evident, sending home just what the red on his blades and maw actually were. "Ruthilo takes pride in feeding any who come to his kitchen. Only hope understand that just because feed any, does not make monster." Mesmer , 272. Hope this is enough to work off of.

sum of its parts His ears perked up at the mention of dessert. Sweet food was one of his favorites, although he had to admit that everything was his favorite. Especially after a long time without a properly cooked meal. Though it would be prudent to finish his soup first before he decided he needed to eat anything else. The restaurant was beginning to fill up now, anyways, and the chef would be much more busy soon, and he didn't want to be a bother. Besides, he was already becoming quite full from the soup and roll. Though he might come back next lunch to taste the dessert. Though it was quite sad he couldn't just get it delivered, though it was good for him to have to walk around now and then, in the sense that eating healthy was good for you. As he was finishing up, the Scyther suddenly appeared at his side again, just as he was deciding for the final time whether to have a dessert or not. His voracious appetite had almost won out. The Scyther's appearance made him jump a little, unsure of what else the bug type might need from him. Maybe he wanted to inquire whether the Doctor wanted the dessert or not? The chef's words, however, were on a completely different topic. Mesmer stared at the chef, confused foe a moment before comprehending. Being a less than active member of the city, he knew little practical knowledge of the city, much less rumors. He stared at the Scyther, still confused by his motion, before suddenly realising. Oh, so that was what the red was. The Audino, however, was not largely bothered. He wasn't a meat eater, but not because he disapproved. If it was a matter of food of questionable sentience, there was little difference between eating plants and eating meat. There was always going to be arguments over it, of course, but Mesmer's ideas of morals were very abstract and loose in any case. "It's fine." He assured, giving a nervous smile, which could be better described as a slight stretch of his lips. "I've got nothing against meat eaters. It's not going to drive me away."It would be hypocritical for him to care about such a thing, since his line of work often touched on morally questionable subjects.

The smile that broke out on the bug's face could have melted a Glaceon with how warm it was, his eyes showing the same joy. Seems this Scyther was likely easily pleased. "Glad to hear it. Ruthilo hopes you return with big appetite. First visit is on house, just let you know. Ruthilo remember every customer, or try to at least. Not always easy, but Ruthilo make do. Also take special requests. Can rent Ruthilo's services outside normal hours. Not expensive either. Ruthilo just like to make happy tummies." He stepped back a little, before taking a bow, his blades point down against the ground as he lowered his head. It was more akin to an actor's bow than a subservient one. "And you can be certain you have the Heridox guarantee from Ruthilo. Respectful and respectable food, always." Rising back up, he nodded to his customer before looking back out the window, a momentary frown upon his face, before he shook it off, trying not to watch the activities outside that betrayed what many thought of his establishment. "May Ruthilo have his newest customer's name? And perhaps favorite food, so Ruthilo may add it to menu if not already have. Never hurt to have larger menu, Ruthilo always say!" Calls came out for more food, or new orders, and the Scyther waved before heading back into his kitchen, certain the Audino would be able to tell him when he came back out, if he didn't say it aloud for him to hear in the kitchen. He did look a little haggard, if one took a closer look, and he didn't seem to have any help around either. Mesmer, 278, I seem to be short again. ^..^

sum of its parts [attr="Class","easybold"]Mesmer gave a small, tentative smile at the Scyther's exultation. Apparently showing his support for the meat industry was good? As long as he made the chef happy. It wasn't as if it mattered much to him, who was mostly unaware and uncaring of current ethical debates. "Thank you." He spoke softly, sentences as short as always, but with more emotion in his tone. "But I'm fine with paying."He wasn't too fond of having others pay his debt. It always felt like he owed them. He took out his backpack, opening the pocket with his money. He didn't carry much with him, seeing as he rarely had any needs that required large amounts of cash. Though of course there was enough to pay for an one-person meal. He hadn't finished yet, but he felt he ought to be ready to pay. If he was forced to pay for his monthly groceries, however, he would come up a bit short. It would be dangerous to carry that much money, seeing how much he usually bought at once. Supermarkets were crowded and irritating areas, to be avoided as much as possible. ”I'm, er. Mesmer." He spoke, slightly stumbling over his assumed name, despite it replacing his true name for more than three years already. He didn't really know why, but it didn't fit as well on his tongue compared to his true name. Despite the uncomfortable connections. "Favorite food? Probably... Oran berry pie, I guess."He watched as the Scyther walked off, silent this time, seeing as he had already called out twice or so, and the restaurant was truly getting busy now.

The bug let off a hearty chuckle as he passed by the table once more, smiling brightly while delivering more dishes to his diners. "Ruthilo have couple recipes for such pie. Have one not even try yet. Perhaps Mesmer come by sometimes and help Ruthilo decide which is best. But not soon, no. Ruthilo too busy lately. Need help soon. Getting harder to keep up with so many hungry bellies!" As he continued to zip around, the smile never left his face, and despite how tired he obviously was, he didn't take a single break either. Running into the kitchen, running dishes out and taking orders left and right. Not once, however, did he ever try to have anymon try anything they didn't mention was among their liking. Instead he always asked what they liked after mentioning his special. There was little doubt, he loved what he did, and he did it well. There were even a couple of tables where he hugged the customer, and it was returned in kind, though one or two looked on in disgust at the display, he didn't seem to care about that. He was just happy to make the one in front of him happy and sated. Eventually returning to Mesmer, he collected the dirty dishes, still wearing that smile he'd had the whole time. Once more, his buzzing voice broke through the din of the dining room, seeming to cut easily through the rest of the noise around them. "Ruthilo hope to see Mesmer again soon. Ruthilo thanks you for coming here today. Always happy to make another satisfied tummy with tasty treats." Mesmer, 271, I'm shriinkiiiing! Halp!

sum of its parts [attr="Class","easybold"]Mesmer watched with a slight smile as the Scyther continued to serve his customers, his meal now almost finished. He could do with eating out a bit more, if this was what restaurants had to offer. When he had time, maybe. He took another, final spoonful of the stew, savoring the last bit. Like the Scyther, he was commonly busy, although he supposed he had more rest times compared to the chef. He would not be able to visit soon, even if Ruthilo was available. He would have to try to remember to come back sometime, though. "I'll definitely be back." He promised as the Chef neared his table once more. "My schedule's pretty full, too, so maybe when we both have some time." Though he didn't work on the weekends. Perhaps he could find a way to help the chef with his restaurant during days off? No, that wouldn't work. Even if he didn't cook, he didn't think he could pull of serving food without dropping anything. Maybe if a friend of a friend needed work, or something... He played with his spoon for a while barely realising he was doing so until the Scyther came to collect his dishes. As the bug-type did, he stood up, waiting slightly awkwardly until the bug-type had finished. He felt an urge to help, though he knew he would merely get in the way. "Thank you very much." He said, once the chef had finished, dipping his head in a sign of gratitude . "I'll be sure to come back, maybe with a few friends."He gave the cook a small wave as he exited the restaurant, feeling happier than he had before in that day.

Zorre wondered how he had ended up here, in the middle of the city. This wasn't good, not good at all. Who knew when the feral would emerge, demanding that he maim some innocent bystander? He had to find a way out of this city, but he was good and lost. How had he got here again? Oh that's right, he'd been following that... that smell! It was a delectable scent, and it still wafted in the air around him, teasing him. It smelled of his homeland, strangely enough, and the recipes they used to make there.
A grumpig stumbled past Zorre, going in the opposite direction of the bug, and suddenly, Zorre's mouth filled with saliva. Get it! Sink your blades into him! a high-pitched, grating voice in his head demanded. Zorre shook his head. "Not am no will I!" he burst out wildly, drawing the attention of those around him. Upon seeing no-one around the scyther, they backed away, eyeing the bug strangely.
Zorre paid little attention to it, used to the weird looks he would get from others. The other, though, was not as happy with this. Look at how they shy away in fear! We are superior, and we should take what we like from pokemon like them! You are hungry, no? Take what you want! DO IT!
"NO!" Zorre shouted in return. He didn't want to hurt anyone!! He just wanted to get out of here, and back into the forest, where it was safe. Unbeknownst to him, he had emerged in the store front of a certain other scyther. He was making a ruckus, gripping his head with the back sides of his blades. He just wanted -no, needed something to snap him out of the argument with his other half.

Having nearly finished the lunch rush, Ruthilo was starting the task of cleaning dishes when he heard a commotion nearby. Gasps followed by a strangley familiar voice. He left the dishes to the sink's soaking water as he made his way towards the doorway to his dining room, stepping unusually slowly as he did so. "It couldn't be. He wouldn't be here in the middle of a city. Not this far from hunting grounds. But that voice..." He listened intently, the window he used to hear all the orders as he worked close by the door, until he heard more. This time, the one word screamed with intent told the cook all he needed to know. With a burst of his wings and a dash of his legs, he was through the door and in front of the other Scyther in a blur. "Zorre? Zorre! It is Ruthilo! Hurry, hurry. Back of kitchen, hurry! Ruthilo know. Ruthilo help!" He turned to his customers and those in the streets, his own blades to each side of his fellow Scyther, blocking the view of the others in the area, leaving only the kitchen door visible. He hoped that would direct him there. "It is no problem, all. Ruthilo has surprise family visit to attend to! Please, enjoy meals without worry." He tried to gently nudge Zorre towards the door, which was thankfully the same direction as the wonderful smell that had attracted him in the first place. The smell of home, of family, of...meat. Yes, while the smell of the vegetable stew had been powerful, Ruthilo had of course cooked a couple meat dishes for customers, one of which was a major dish in Ferious. The Frothing Broth. A thick soup of several meats all in one bowl, it was both delicious and incredibly filling. "Please, Zorre, please, let Ruthilo sate Zorre's hunger. Ruthilo always make good taste, yes?" Zorre, 318

Zorre blinked as the buzz of wings heralded the arrival of a familiar face. Ruthilo. A former clan-member, he hadn't seen in awhile. "Ruthilo? Is what you here doing?" He asked in confusion -he hadn't known the other scyther had left the clan lands as well! The other scyther beckoned him inside the storefront behind him. Zorre wasn't sure that was a good idea -more pokemon to attack, wouldn't it be? But he trusted the other scyther, and so followed him into the space warily. He was whisked to a back room, Ruthilo making excuses to his customers, and then the delectable scent that had brought him here was in front of him. The Frothing Broth! It had been ages since Zorre had tasted the food of his homeland! Several different meats floating in a sea of broth, it had always been one of Zorre's favorites! Even the feral was quiet now, as Ruthilo invited him to eat his fill. Zorre just about dunked his face into the bowl -only the niggling civilized part of him caused him to pick up a spoon and start feeding himself that way. The feral purred in the back of his mind as meat hit his tongue, and was mashed between sharp teeth. "Ruthilo, be you why here?" Zorre stumbled through the question, hoping his old friend still knew how to translate his scrambled tongue in the interim between their last encounters. It had been at least three years since they'd last seen each other, after all. Zorre couldn't believe he'd actually found the scyther here -or rather, the other scyther had found him! "Liked you it thought there, I?" Zorre winced at the word scramble. It was his most embarrassing trait -he just couldn't get the words to come out in the right order! Ever since The Hunters had rescued him from drowning when he was just a baby bug, and he'd started learning the common tongue instead of the screeches and hisses of his late feral parents, he'd never been able to speak right. Ruthilo knew this, though, as the other scyther had been his friend for quite some time before Zorre decided to strike it out on his own. He wondered what had brought the other scyther here, to Inviticus. As far as Zorre knew, Ruthilo was satisfied being a cook for the clan! What had brought the other scyther to this backwards country? Surely, he got his fair share of unpleasant encounters, with the amount of pokemon here that hated pokemon like them, who ate ferals. Pah, it was ridiculous. Every feral knew they had a chance of being eaten one day, it was a rule of survival! Whether it was by another feral or a civilized pokemon, it made no difference to the ferals. But noooo, it was considered a form of murder by many here in this crazy country. It was enough to make Zorre wonder what had made him leave in the first place. But as far as he was concerned, he couldn't go back to the clan. Not with this parasite in his head making him attack anything that moved, be it feral or not. He couldn't go to the clan and admit his biggest shame -his inability to keep his feral side in check. In fact, it was a wonder the feral side wasn't fighting him now. But perhaps the taste of meat was keeping him at bay for now. Zorre looked over at Ruthilo, and wondered how he could tell his old friend what he had gone through. Would the other understand? Somehow, he doubted it. Perhaps it was only self-doubt that plagued the older scyther, but he didn't want his younger friend to hate him. Especially since he could barely help it... it wasn't his fault the tyrunt had decided to attack, unleashing his feral side forever! ...or maybe it was. He shouldn't have been in the Radiant Caverns, as young and weak as he was, but he had felt like he had something to prove, and his rash decision had come back to bite him hard.
