MESMER FULL NAME: Mesmer AGE: twenty-three BIOLOGICAL GENDER: male MEMBER GROUP: white dawn HOME COUNTRY: invictus OCCUPATION: doctor/bioscientist POKEMON // WHAT ARE YOU? SPECIES: audino ABILITY: healer LEVEL: 10 EGG MOVE AND CLASS BONUS: wish and ice punch DRASTIC CHANGES: Normal OVERALL APPEARANCE Mesmer is, for the most part, visually similar to an average audino, a little thinner than the norm, but unworthy of a second glance. Another look, however, will reveal more wounds than one can count, small but present, stubbornly present despite the Audino's regenerative presence. He wears glasses, sometimes. If out in the wilds, he prefers to keep them off, as they only truly help him read rather than aid his observational skills, and would most likely break. Otherwise, in civilization, he keeps them on constantly. Generally, his lack of care for his appearance makes him look dishevelled, not that he minds, but during formal occasions, will attempt to look passable, and considerably neatened. PERSONALITY // WHO ARE YOU? LIKES ✔creativity - mesmer considers himself to be a rather creative person, and appreciates others' efforts to think laterally, even if they fail. He has very little respect for those who would rather stick to the old ways, and rarely tries using the same method twice. Half his life is tied up experimenting with his newest ideas, and giving himself a new way to use what abilities he has is something of an obsession with him. ✔lectures - mesmer is not much of a speaker, usually answering in one or tow words, or using his actions to explain. When it comes to his favorite topics, however, or when someone else shows an incomplete or inaccurate knowledge of something, Mesmer will start talking. And never stop. He takes unkindly to others interrupting his mini-speeches, even though he understands it that others do not find the topic as interesting. ✔food - despite his size, the audino has a voracious appetite. He enjoys nibbling on snacks all the time, though he eats little during meals (probably due to his snacking). He's not a picky eater, as long as its clean. Unfortunately for him, he can't cook, and he rarely bothers or has the time to go out to eat, which means most of his meals consists of junk food. DISLIKES ✖hugging - mesmer honestly prefers to keep to himself, and is rather solitary. For him, hugging is simply not the correct way to greet others. He's always been rather distant from his family, too, so the fact that he was rarely shown affection may have caused him to reject hugging as an adult. ✖healing - he's an audino, his mother and father used every second of their lives to make others better, but for mesmer, the healing arts is not where wants to spend his life studying, and he has force himself to stand before a patient. Partly, it's the pain the patient is suffering - audino's limited empathy, for him, is a curse rather than a boon. Partly, it's because he hates being able to heal just because he was born able to - if he didn't gain the power after hard work, it's not worth using. He won't admit it to himself, but it's also because one mistake can ruin a pokemon's life, and he doesn't trust himself with that kind of power. ✖secrets - his life is a mystery to everyone but him, but he hates it when anyone except him keeps a secret that he doesn't know, and considers it a matter of personal honor to discover their secret. He doesn't really care what the secret is, since he's not going to use it against the person, or ever mention it again, and wouldn't mind keeping it secret for the person, just as long as he knew it. HABITS ►emotionless mask - as a child, it has been driven into him that whatever else he did, he must not show any emotions in front of (future) patients, so as not to firghten them or give them unnecessary hope. Even though he has no disire to participate in his parent's career, he continued to develope that skill as a child, and his default reaction to being surprised nor nervous is to make his face void of emotions. ►scribbling - mesmer carries a pad of paper and a pencil with him at all times, presumably to take notes in case he forgets something, yet most of those pages are marked with senseless scribbles. The audino hates to forget anything, espeically since forgetting things makes him anxious. Over time, he has linked all feelings of anxiousness to the action of forgetting something recently. Due to that, when nervous, mesmer tends to pull his notebook out in an attempt to write something down, which usually ends up with him scribbling over the pages. FEARS ►being stuck in a hospital - besides one of his worst memories started in an hospital, he hates being helpless, and hates having to rely on the healers he despises. He functions mostly on self-confidence and self-reliance. The fact that one of these days, he might not be able to support himself scares him. His rational mind knows that it would be better to rely on the hospi5al rather than suffer from a wound, but it does not stop his desire to get out of hospitals as soon as possible. OVERALL To break Mesmer out of his emotionless shell is a difficult task, but not so difficult as it seems at a glance. He rarely expresses excitement abut anything, mild curiosity possibly the strongest emotion one can provoke from him. He's intelligent, but rarely speaks to others, and often uses his talents on minor things, rarely paying attention to ths larger picture. While mesmer possesses creativity and intelligence, a long attention span is something he sadly lacks, and it is not uncommon for him to lose track of what he was doing to contemplate another thing entirely. His whimsical nature causes many to ignore him as an unimportant person, though that is far from the truth. He understands social interactions well, though he usually believes himself to be far above such activities normally. He has no respect for basic manners, at least, not when he feels the urge to interrupt someone's sentence to correct a mistake. He's a perfectionist, and takes offense to the smallest of mistakes. When you ask him a question, be prepared for a long-winded answer, often with nothing to do with the answer of the question, but the different intepretations of the question itself. He takes pride in what he knows. A firm believer in the saying 'knowledge is power', mesmer takes any challenge to his knowledge as a personal challenge, and isn,t afriad to get into an arguement, one of the few moments when he is truly vocal. He believes himself to be the most knowledgeable in his group, and is adamant to keeping the status quo this way. If someone seems to take over his role as the walking encyclopaedia, he would do anything to restore himself to his rightful position. And afterwards, something bad may mysteriously happen to that unsurper. Totally unrelated to him being vindictive. He plays by the rules. Follows them down to the letter. Stressing over how something is wrong is one of his favorite activities. He might not be a shining moral compass, since he sees it as his duty to follow all rules, whether good or bad, but he certainly is a handy guide for how to toe the line without stepping over it, something he does regularly. Doing the right thing is no match for the lure of a good reward, especially if you can rationalise your guilt away. He dislikes those who are born with power, believing it is something one should work hard to get. Those who are naturally gifted offends every inch of his hard-working soul. More importantly, he hates being seen as lesser because he wasn't born with natural talents in his field. He's worked hard for everything in his life, and for someone to surpass that easily strikes a deep wound in his self-confidence. Unlike other Audinos, empathy, to him, is more of a curse than a gift. He has enough trouble with his own emotions without taking on the burden of others. He often refuses to utilise this, even when asked to. Similarly, he dislikes being pushed into the role of a healer, even though it is the inclination and gift of his species. With great gifts come great responsibility, and of course he will attempt to help a wounded pokemon, but not unless there is any other choice. On the other hand, hlaf his career involves mending wounds, but he prefers to do this without the help of his innate gifts as much as he can. He can stand the sight of blood a lot better than when he was young, it's just on healing now that he dislikes. HISTORY // BUT WHY? ■ Mesmer is, of course, not the Audino's real name. He was born as Eyven Hart, but has cast away this name along with most of his heritage. Instead, he took up the name Mesmer, no last name. ■ His mother was an Audino, a skilled healer. She wasn't educated in diseases, her knowledge of anatomy was wonky, but her skills in channelling healing energy was superb. His father was a togetic, a bontanist. ■ It was expected that Mesmer would also follow his mother's path. He had the inborn talent, after all. ■ As a child, he was teased for this, in the way little children teased those who didn't share the same beliefs as them. He thought healing was the best thing in the world, whereas most of the sought to fight for the military. It didn't really put him off seeking his mother's career, but it made it a lot less appealing, once he realised no one else coveted it. It became his duty, rather than his reward. ■ The incident happened when he ws barely five. His mother had taken him along with her to work. He hadn't been ready. Despite his mother expecting him to inherit her job, she had told him relatively little about it. All he saw, when faced with the patients, was the pain, while his mother focused on the healing. ■ He couldn't stand being in the same room as patients. Nor could he stand being in the hospital at all. He didn't want anything to do with his mother's art after that incident. Despite his mother's pleadings, he never came round to see her view. ■ He became quieter as he aged, going to school, seemingly celebrating with everyone else, and sharing the same likes and dislikes. Back home, the arguement continued. Eyven picked up an interest in biology. His mother protested. He became determined to pursue biology when he was older. His mother protested. His father was simply resigned. ■ When he was ten, his mother gave birth to a daughter named Adria. He could tell that his mother had given up on him, and spent a lot more time caring for his new sister. He didn't care. He didnlt want to part of his family's heritage, anymore. ■ Rather than healing, he prefered to study in the sterile labs, far away from reality. ■ The fact that he joined the military, after he graduated, however, came as a shock to his family. It sparked the biggest arguement between him and his mother, a pacifist, yet, resulting in him leaving home. ■ He joined the military because, besides being a steady source of income, it was the best place to be noticed. Only the government did bioengineering to any great scale, and he wasn't willing to join the smaller organisations. They tended to get shut down a lot. ■ He also felt it was important to learn basic self defence. He was not strong, and his species was notthe fighting type as a whole, but he was determined to earn a place other than 'field medic'. ■ He spent a year training, to make up for his weak consitution. It was at the end of this year, three months after his twentieth birthday, that his sister dissapeared. ■ She was only ten, no one knew what happened. Most think she was kidnapped, since she just dissapeared on a crowde street one day. But no ransom was demanded, and no trace of her was found. His mother begged for him to come back, but he refused. ■ The dissapearance of his sister hit him hard. Despite his passionless exterior, he did love his sister. Sort of. In the sense that she was the only family member he felt attached to. He didn't say anything to anyone, however, just spoke less and worked more. ■ A Froslass at work was one of his chief comforters. Compared to him, she was far more sociable, and could tell his discomfort. She was similar enough to him, in that both of them preferred to suffer silently. She gave the impression that ahe understood him. ■ Two weeks after, on a walk outside of town. He was attacked by a jolteon. He managed to win, barely, leaving the electric pokemon with a broken leg. ■ He healed it, not out of goodwill, but as a warning to the Jolteon's group, whom he suspected, from bits and pieces the jolteon had let slip (the electric pokemon was obviously not s skilled mercenary), had captured his sister as well. Rather than heal it so that the bones knitted togethe straight. He kept it crooked as the bones joined together again. ■ He quit the milita soon after. The experience jarred him, and although he reported the shonky healing to the police as an accident, and even the jolteon, after being brought to custody, believed it to be an accident, he knew. He didn't was to be the meek one, but the he didn,t want to harm anyone, either. ■ He told the Froslass about the incident, after swearing her to secrecy. She didn't seem shocked, and if Mesmer dared venture a guess, he would say that she was almost pleased. He quit the milita the next day, ■ He pursued a scholarship for his field of research, sought organisations that would take him on as a biologist. All refused. He moved away from the little town where his parents lived, instead choosing another city and another name for himself. It was for the new opportunities, and also to rid himself of the bad memories. His sister had still not been found. ■ Months later, the Froslass tracked him down. She wanted to recruit him to join the White Dawn. He had the strength to be a good fighter, for an Audino, and had the brutality, when it was needed. More importantly, while he could fight, he could also heal. That was why they wanted him. They would give hima place as a biologist as a cover job, give him what he always wanted in return for his service. ■ He still refused. He didn't know if he wanted to fight anymore, but he did know that he didn't want to act as a medic. The prize almost balanced everything out, but it wasn't good enough. But the Frislass persisted. Continued amping up the pressure until it became a demand. Eventually, he cracked. It was then that he understood that no one was a friend. ■ Slowly, he began relearning how to fight. Occasionally, he would have patients. He tried to forget about all this and instead focus on his day job. For the government, as a biologist. Even that was less glamorous than it felt before, despite it being exactly what he desired. ■ A year later, he bumped into his sister. Barely twelve, she seemed a lot older. More mature and battle hardened. Like his, she had a new name. Elspeth. She seemed rather furious that her older brother had chosen to serve the givernment of Invictus, while she willingly joined the group of outlaws that kidnapped her. He would have accepted her speech, added her words to his growing uncertainity about the government, if she didn't seem so... indoctrinated. A whole new personality had seemed to be channeled into his younger, previously meek sister. He didn't trust her anymore. Furious, his sister had deoarted, but he couldn't bring himself to care. ■ So he continued working for the government. It beat any other options he had. His brief meeting with his sister had keft him uncertain of what was right and wrong. The White Dawn may be unpleasant, but they were on his side. His sister's band, however, was the wrong choice. He was sure of it. He didn't like what she had turned into. ■ He wasn't aleader, he did not know what to do. Cliffs surrounded him every way he turned, but he accepted that. Perhaps, it was his fate.
