A beautiful day it was! The sun shined, the children played, and things seemed to be going well for this home for those without homes. Still, she could not help, but to feel a bit bitter. She was a bird, yet she had walked. She had feathers, yet she could not fly. No matter how hard she flapped her wings, she could not gain any lift. She was a grounded pidgey, so it was only natural that her mood was a bit on the irritated side. Despite this, she knew to watch her tongue and temper around the children. She had just arrived at the home for the day. She did not quite live there, but she still helped around with day to day life. There was not much a flightless bird could do, but she could keep the children in check just fine.
The pidgey's dark feathers looked odd, ruffled and trimmed despite her many attempts to fix them before she came. She had ultimately given up fretting over her appearance in exchange for not being late. With a greeting to a rather surprised owner for the house of those without a home, she checked in and prepared herself for a long day at work doing what she enjoyed...when the kids weren't being little trouble makers of course.
She had climbed her way up onto a desk, her beak hooking onto the wood as she pulled herself up to a higher vantage point. Hm...it should have been around lunch time, right? Or was it after? Her thoughts were interrupted, as she began to hear a rather familiar voice coming from farther down the hall. valen ooc // well, it's something. I still need to get a bit used to Peregrine's character so forgive me if this is a bit on the lacking side! Sorry it took so long as well!

What had it been... four years since he'd been here? If he were to be honest, he'd lost track a little. Whatever the specifics may be, though, he was more than aware that it was the longest he'd lived -- well, in a relatively loose sense of the term, with how often he wandered off anyway -- in any one location. Not when his father took him along since he was a little child, not when he'd run off from a few different orphanages before deciding to try and stop that habit.
Though if it came to habits, moving around a lot and wanting no secrets kept from him were quite a bit up there on that list...
...and on the latter point, there certainly appeared to be something that fit that bill.
Well... just for now, he supposed, he'd let her off the hook. He still had some kids to burn off a little energy -- maybe they'd be a bit quieter at lunch. Those actually here to watch over them would certainly be lucky were that the case with some of them. Just for a little while, anyway, then he was free to run off and do as he wished, especially with a few of those around since giving up trying futile efforts of controlling him.
"Hang on a little! Wait..." Valen trailed off, darting off -- as was just his usual -- to around where he'd seen, or perhaps a bit more so smelled, the ever-familiar, dark-feathered Pidgey last. And... she wasn't really going anywhere else? That made things a bit easier, then... and his request to 'hang on' a bit meaningless. Ah well.
"Where've... well... mm..." he muttered, trailing off thoughtfully as he glanced over some of the Pidgey's ruffled feathers, then idly up to the ceiling in thought, as if debating in his own head what question to start with out of the multiple he likely had. "Are you... alright?" he finally settled for after a few moments, a look of concern on his face as he glanced back over to some of those feathers, before turning his eyes to Peregrine herself.
@peregrine notes: it's no trouble; I can more understand a character taking a bit to really form. and nah, not on the lacking side at all

"Oh, Valen!" the bird chirped happily as she resisted the urge to spread the once beautiful wings, "I didn't realize you had called out to me, my apologies."
She looked down at the eevee from her perch on the desk she had claimed. The eevee seemed to think over something, but she could tell what was on his mind. It was quite obvious actually, since there was a sort of elephant in the room so to speak. While the eevee mulled over the proper words to say, she had formulated a way back down. She could have just jumped, but she would simply fall like a rock. Instead, she had climbed her way back down with the use of her beak against the wood.
When she had reached the floor to speak with the normal type properly, he had at last asked a question...she was not expecting. Many pokemon she had met before had the very same first question, "What happened to your feathers?" It was an irritating and rather painfully grim reminder, not like she was reminded every moment of every day of her inability to fly!
The keeper tilted her head at the eevee with a tinge of curiosity before she spoke with her lovely chirp once more, "I'm fine!" she spoke. Maybe Valen was not going to ask if she didn't say anything about it? "Why, I've only just returned from my vacation, remember? I couldn't possibly be better, otherwise I would have to take more time off and that simply wouldn't do now would it?" She had never said anything about a vacation before herself, but that was what the White Dawn had recommended for her to use, even despite her appearance. The White Dawn always had her back, they had even convinced the staff that she simply had to take a break due to a "doctor's notice" through some sort of stress with familial relations after the first week of a failure to return from her mission.
Her appearance had been quite a shock to the staff, but none have dared to question it as of yet...except Valen. Valen may have been a resident at the orphanage, but Peregrine was aware of just how much he helped the children. While he may not have been a full-time employee, but she appreciated what he did for the kids, even if it was just to keep a house over his head.
"How have you been though? It's been such a long time! Has anybody found a nice family to call home?" she asked. valen ooc // Here we gooo~

She was... climbing down? That was... well, maybe not wholly unexpected, from the look of things. But still, quite different than anything he'd have been figuring. Something had gone on, there could be no doubt of that... nor, just as well, the fact that Valen needed to know. Never was it made a secret that he didn't like any secrets being kept from him, as open as he was with any of his own would-be secrets.
"Mm... I guess not..." Valen seemed to agree with a little nod, if quite doubtfully. He wasn't about to buy that... but perhaps just yet wasn't quite the time. Only momentarily, his eyes returned to those feathers of the Pidgey's, before turning back to Peregrine's face.
"Some of the kids have been over the last couple months, yeah. We've got a new Glameow in as well," the Eevee somewhat thoughtfully spoke, glancing up to the ceiling momentarily as he considered just who had come and went in the time since Peregrine herself had gone. "Pretty sure they tried passing me off again once as well... but I've been fine, anyway. Still none of the kids that can keep up with me forever," he chuckled. Though, well... that was about the only thing he generally did around the place, was keep burning the kids' energy levels. Anything more, none had had much luck with.
"So what's your plan, then? Take it easy a little and just check things over after your 'vacation', I guess?" he asked, placing maybe slight emphasis on that word... though perhaps the fact that he was using it at all was testament to not seeking to pry into it just yet.

Peregrine listened as Valen explained what she had missed. Some had found new homes? Ah that would explain why she was not seeing certain students around here. A new glameow? She had not seen them around here yet. She was a bit shocked to hear that the orphanage had attempted to pass Valen off yet again. It was a bit strange, for she was certain that the headmaster would rather evict a student of his age rather than pass him off. Not to mention Valen contributed to the orphanage so much in her eyes! Then again, everyone contributed in some way to her.
The flying type pondered her thoughts briefly before she responded to the eevee, "Oh, nothing much. I had initially planned to get back to work full force, but there's not quite much I can do. I can't quite fly around like I used to, so getting from point a to point b has been a bit difficult for me. I'm certain I'll get things done eventually though!" she chirped happily in response.
Yep, he was definitely curious, she had assumed. The look was all over his face and tone in her eyes. To be quite honest, she would have assumed such a thing even if Valen did not truly care. It was a bit self-centered of her, but it was kind of hard to just ignore the rampaging tauros in a glass shop. She continued to ignore it herself, a bit curious as to how long it would take for Valen to say something, if at all. valen ooc // Here we gooo~

Can't quite fly like she used to... well, clearly, with the way she'd been cautiously moving along the desk. He supposed he had to give her some credit for apparent optimism, but... 'eventually'? And how long was 'eventually' supposed to be, exactly?
"Hm..." Valen simply muttered in thought for now. Tilting his head slightly in thought as he seemed to consider it, he mentally shrugged it off after a few moments... well, mostly. "Well, I suppose it's fine... but you know I'm gonna want to know sometime. I've never liked secrets," he spoke... as if that last point even needed to be said, with how obvious he was about it at any given time. Even his own outlaw father he'd originally grown up with was no secret to anyone around him who was ever at all curious about his parents.
"In the meantime, then, what would you be doing if you could still fly around right now? Besides, well... just flying?" the Eevee asked, turning a curious look back to Peregrine. "If it's just getting somewhere, well, you know I'm good for that; I could even bring you along on my back or something?" he offered.

He had seen through her attempts to brush it off it seemed. He went on to mention that he did not like secrets, a fact she knew very well to be true. If only he knew what kind of second life she was required to keep tucked away. As much as she did not like to lie to others, let alone those she trusted, it was necessary. It was very well likely that Valen was never to hear a word about what truly happened. She might spoon feed him a lie or two, but never the truth. The truth would be a poison that would not only impact her but him as well.
She said nothing in response as the eevee went on to talk about how he could be her legs. She fluffed up what remained of her feathers slightly with a stern shake, "I still have two legs, there's no need for you to walk me everywhere." While it was true, the speed of her progress would be questionable in terms of efficiency.
"Watching the kiddies is one thing that would be easier, but I was thinking about doing a simple check up around the place to see if anybody's been slacking while I was away and give them a stern squawkin to," she gave an amused laugh as if she looked forward to it. She still was not the most intimidating bird in the world, but by golly things had to be done right around here!
Hmm...who to begin with though? "Have you noticed any slackers as of late?" she spoke with a kinder tone to Kalen, knowing full well she was basically asking him to tell on any staff that might have been doing their job poorly. It was always amusing to ask the younger children about this, but she doubted that Kalen would do it...or would he? Either way, the result would be amusing. valen
