Bio 101 // Except It's Fun
THE POKEMON BODY
While all pokemon are different, their bodies share many similarities. All pokemon have energy, aura, hearts, and minds. Each pokemon has its species, as you already know, but each individual looks different in some way. There are no majorly drastic differences, but more small subtle ones. As an example, a german sheperd. If you were to tell an owner of one to find their dog in a pound full of shepards, they would be able to tell which one was their's because they are familiar with the dog's features and way they act. This is a similar case for pokemon.
Alolan Pokemon here are simply variants of particular pokemon that happened to have evolved, or been made depending on the pokemon's belief, differently in order to better suit their environment. While we will still be referring to them as Alolan forms, in character there is no "Alola" region.
ENERGY
It's energy, not magic. When pokemon attack they use this energy to some extent. Some attacks are more energy based than others like Special Attacks, but any "real" attack requires this energy that comes from the pokemon. An energy-free attack is your basic tooth-and-claw battle. Your Special Defense is your resistance to that energy that keeps things like Mega Alakazams from making your brain implode immediately. Every pokemon has this energy and has learned to use it over time to improve their skills while making items. For example, Sandstorm Orbs were created through harnessing the power of the move Sandstorm, which uses a pokemon's own energy's resonance with earthly elements in order to lift particles of sand and make them spin into a sandstorm.
I know only a few people are interested in this, but "Aura" does actually have an explanation. Aura is the manifestation of this energy not visible to the naked eye. A lucario can see this aura; the color of the aura changes based on emotion while the movement of the aura often reflects the resonance with the element it is closest to. While a lucario cannot read minds, they can tell what a move's type is by the way the aura appears while the attack is being used. A lucario would not be able to know exactly what move it is going to be or how it is being used, but they would know whether it is resonating with fire, water, or whatever. A lucario also needs to be careful while "reading" auras, as someone's "Happy" aura could be someone else's "Sad" as everyone is different.
A pokemon attuned to aura, with much training, can also use their own aura to fight without moves. For instance, adept students of the aura arts are capable of channeling their aura through weapons and such to make them as strong as moves. They can also manifest their aura in its purest form, which takes on the properties of their (primary) type. For instance, an ice-type aura student may be able to form structures out of ice, while a fighting-type would be capable of empowering their own body. These skills require immense energy and focus to use, and they are known to be difficult to perform unless the user is a true master of the art. A student can also control moves to a greater degree more easily and to a greater degree, as they have an easier time controlling the the aura.
It is also possible to flood one's own body with excess aura and expel pure aura energy to attack, and while this is extremely effective in combat, it is also highly volatile and risky. Only a master is considered to be capable of doing such a thing without dying or permanently maiming themself, and even then, it is still highly dangerous. It is illegal for an aura master to teach this technique to others, as it is considered on the same level as mega stones in being far too dangerous.
A pokemon that is not stated to be in tune with auras can train to sense them and even use their own in combat, but it is incredibly difficult and takes a lifetime of devotion along with a skillful teacher that is naturally in tune with aura such as Lucario or Medicham. They will not see or read auras as well as those in tune with it can, and using aura techniques will exhaust them far quicker and quite possibly even harm them as their bodies are not naturally developed to handle it.
If you're curious about the details on the effects and limit of aura control, ask Babylon. Please do not try to portray this skill without first asking for clarification. The details on every type would be far too intricate to list here.
EATING
All pokemon are capable of being fed by fruits and berries; whether or not they choose to is a different story. It is said that when pokemon were first created Arceus had intended for them all to live off of fruits and berries alone, but Giratina granted certain pokemon the ability to consume others for food when true hunger came about and food become a valuable resource.
All pokemon are expected to eat fruits and berries when they're in a lower class of society, as meat and plantation that originate from the body of a pokemon are considered more of a delicacy. Particularly rich pokemon usually indulge themselves in these dishes and take joy in the hunt. There are restrictions on hunting, though, as only feral pokemon can be hunted. The morality behind this is actually a huge current issue in the pokemon world, as many argue that the ferals are just like them, just not well educated, while others think it should not matter since they're not intelligent and civilized. The rich also seem to particularly enjoy their dishes, so it's not uncommon for someone to pull a few strings behind the scenes in order to shut protestors up.
LIFE SPANS
All pokemon are different, there is no denying that. Some pokemon can live longer than others due to their body. While we're not going to force you to have a character that's only going to live for a few days at the most because they're basically a butterfly, a butterfree shouldn't be alive for 100 years. This also means that maturity rates for pokemon are quite different, so the Military might accept a Butterfree faster than they would a tyrantrum.
Rock, Steel, and Dragon pokemon tend to live a particularly long time reaching up to 150 years before in the history books, fairy and grass types live around 200, while bugs usually live a shorter life span of around 50 or so years. Overall, pokemon average out to around 100 years of life if those with shorter lives are cut out.
If a pokemon is stated to live a specific time span in the pokedex that's longer than the average pokemon, then please follow that.
GENDER
There have been cases where pokemon are Gender Dysphoric or are attracted to a pokemon of the same gender. These characters are most certainly allowed and welcomed! Below are some gender-based mechanics in the game that are going to be explained to befit the forum.
Rivalry - This goes off of your gender identity.
Attract - Attract inspires the deepest form of passion a pokemon is capable of. It is based on sexual orientation rather than biological sex. If the target is completely incapable of feeling romantic love or sexual attraction, it will instead make them feel intense friendship. Same goes for abilities like Cute Charm.
