UPDATE
// just a message from the adminsJuly // An activity check has been posted up! Be sure to check it out so we can properly archive the inactive characters! Don't forget to keep an eye out though, there might be an advert contest coming soon!
Hello! I'd like to propose something of interest and see how you all feel about it. Put simply: allowing adoption of archived (inactive) characters. There is no regular activity check, but do keep in mind that people are going to be given quite some time to save their characters from a straight-up deletion or being put up for adoption if they opt to do so. I know at face value, the idea of adopting archived characters may be unappealing, but allow me to explain my reasoning before you get out your pitchfork.
I understand why some people may dislike the idea of this. Some aren't fond of the idea that if they happen to fall into the abyss for a while due to life, someone could just jack their characters and run off with them. Well, you would be allowed to request that your characters not be adoptable in the event of your absence or that they could go to a specific person for control over what happens to them, and if a user happens to come back after their character has been adopted, they would be allowed to appeal to have the character back. Then there are people who may be turned off by the idea of someone adopting their character and portraying them very poorly. However, this would be regulated to ensure a user can roleplay a character to a high standard of accuracy and applications will be put into place unlike the NPC adoptables where you can just buy them. Adoptable player characters will be held to a higher standard than the NPC ones and a user would need to be around for a certain amount of time (likely a few months) before being allowed to adopt archived characters.
But regardless, this seems like a lot of hassle if there's no good reason for it, right? After all, why should a user be allowed to take someone else's hard work and use it as their own?
First and foremost, having a good character fall into the archives and never be seen on the site again just because their user disappeared sucks. It's a shame to waste a perfectly good character and all the potential that comes with them all because their original roleplayer disappeared for whatever reason and no one else is allowed to take up the mantle (assuming they were okay with their character being adopted). But aside from that, there are bigger issues, such as the effects a character going inactive can have on others. Some characters may end up being tied rather heavily to each other for one reason or another like a love interest that got far enough to become deeply engrained into the character, and to just have another character that has become a large influence on your own character simply be unavailable due to their user going inactive makes it very difficult for some people to roleplay as they may feel bad themselves. Sure, you can say they're still around as a NPC in the behind-the-scenes of the plotline, but with them not being around for threads, it just isn't the same.
So, there are obvious pros and cons to such a system. Namely, the pros are that character potential doesn't get wasted and users don't have to worry about their own characters being damaged due to the lack of someone else's presence. Meanwhile, the cons are that a user could show back up after someone else has already done a lot with their character and a debate ensues over who should get to keep the character, and of course, there's the simple concern that someone could take up your character and not use them in a way that would be satisfactory to you.
With this in mind, I ask you all to consider whether or not you would be open to this system before any of the potential mentioned issues are worked out. We're not going to force it on you if you don't want it; this is simply an option for those that are willing to give their characters up if they happen to disappear and have important connections to others.
So I can probably say I'd be neutral about this. It's great for people who do not want to see their character's potential wasted and every pro you've mentioned, but I have a question: if this were to be a thing, and someone allows for their character to be adoped should they go inactive, could they state that their character is still theirs by creation rights and that the adoptee is simply 'borrowing' the character for the purpose of the rp? Adopt implies that the character changes owners but I might be getting the wrong understanding about this...
well I believe the world is burning to the ground oh well I guess we’re gonna find out let’s see how far we've come
The original owner would be heavily favored in the event of two users fighting over who gets to keep a character, but they would not be able to simply claim absolute ownership over the adopted character. If someone makes a neat character, ties them to someone else's character, then simply leaves for an extended period of time while another user adopts the character and develops them a great deal, it would be rather unfair to just give automatic ownership back to the original roleplayer.
But for a user to lose ownership of their character, they would have to go inactive without doing much with their character and stay gone long enough for another user to heavily develop and work with the character, not to mention the character wouldn't even be put up for adoption for a few months. In other words, the original user would have to show extreme neglect while another user would have to show determination and commitment, and at that point, the character's creator probably wouldn't want them back in the first place.
And of course, if a user is still uncomfortable with the idea of not being able to reclaim their character (despite the fact that the character would have been with someone else for quite some time and would almost certainly be different through character development by then), they can just say they don't want their characters to be adoptable.
If someone makes drama out of adopting/giving their character as an adoptable, they were going to cause drama in some capacity anyway.
Put the system up. It's another tool to give the site and members - become a NPC, become adoptable, give them to another member, or choose to have them become inactive and only touchable by the creator.
Its pretty much the same thing with member countries innit?
Let the member state if they are ok if the character is used on other sites. That solves that problem of 'stealing' no matter how much the character develops in the new person's hands, and immediately lets potential adoptees know whether they want to put time and effort into writing a character they can't take anywhere else without risk of being attacked for stealing.
If there continues to be issues, just retcon in a new member character to keep things moving ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I recommend putting that in the application form somewhere near the bottom, whether they want to opt in or opt out of the adoptable system, but otherwise, I really love this idea, and it makes me almost happy to think that characters can live on, even if their original creators forgot them/had to disappear~ so I pretty much support this pretty strong, I don't think there's much to lose. c:
