He shouldn't have said anything. Urk, urk. "Ah, nope, nope. My day is swell!" Who used that word still? Swell? Who did he think he was? Idiot Unnr! "Super good, nope my day has been really good, especially because I met you!" He smiled widely, as if for proof. If he babbled on about himself, there would only be pitfalls revealing how pitiful and pathetic he truly was. Not a safe zone for conversation when he needed to impress the Liepard, especially if he wanted to keep next week's lunch up as an offer from a politician!
But he was intrigued. About her and her past. He had expected her to have some sort of refined taste, a palate that was beyond him. Instead, there had been something more juicy revealed to the curious Cubone. "Oh, a small village! I see! I came from a small village too, but ahhhh. How amazing. When did you come to Invictus? When did you know you wanted to become a politian?" If he digged deeper, surely Unnr could bring some spectacular present as a grand gesture-- err, as a token of appreciation-- the next time he met Nafretiri. Something thoughtful! Something unique and meaningful! Not to mention, as long as he directed the conversation at something other than himself, he could stop blubbering like a fool.
"Pinap Paradise..." He'd never heard of it. Was it safe to admit that? Or would he sound uncultured and destitute beyond despair? "Sounds awesome! Super awesome. Yup, yup." And at least that wasn't a lie exactly. Just because he hadn't ever been there, it still sounded good. And mental note, her favorite cafe. Memorized.
Unnr caught up with the Liepard and joined her by her side. And then-- almost subconsciously-- he slowed a bit to walk a little bit behind her. They weren't equals after all, and perhaps, that was the natural position of someone who guards an important peron's back. But when the Liepard held the door open for him, Unnr was so touched. He bounced on his way to their small table and thrummed his fingers happily on the menu. "Ahh, same thing please. A Pecha Juice. Yes, I could die right now, I could," he nodded his head vigorously. "Oh wait, just kidding. Not actual die-die, haha." Good thing they were ordering juice. With a drink, Unnr could drown himself and stop himself from talking.
But it was really nice. Sitting down with someone. Instead of soloing into a restaurant alone. He didn't usually eat in cafes or the like because it was awkward and humiliating to just sit there the entire time alone. Instead, he usually took his meals to-go and ate somewhere else in silence. He had missed sharing a meal with someone. It was nice. Really nice.

❊ BACK TO NEVERLAND ❊
She heard his question about her origins and decided to hold off answering until they were well-seated and being served their juice. It shouldn't be a long story but she felt as if they should be comfortable and focused one each other before she decided to delve much further into her past. Speaking of, the waitress nodded her head and with a promise that she would be "right back", she turned and headed away. Now, she was able to focus completely on her little "friend". What was it he had asked again? Ah yes, about the village and how she wanted to become a politician. Although she felt she should say something first, to help ease her little companion's mind. "You don't have to be nervous, Unnr, we're all equals here. Just a couple of pals having lunch together." The liepard reassured him with a smile before delving into the nitty-gritty of his question. "I'm actually rather new to Invictus, I arrived only about a month ago, if that." She thought on it, the whirlwind decision to leave Fipehle and then her rapid move to the capital. It was a quick decision, done mostly to get her out of range of her thieving brother. That title had been hers but she wouldn't dwell on it. He was back in that tiny village being groomed for the throne while she was on to bigger and better things. "To be honest with you I didn't actually decide to become a politician, as in, it wasn't something that I always wanted to do." She paused, wondering how much she should tell him and with an inward shrug decided to leave no-holds-barred. It wasn't as if he was going to run and tell her life story to anyone.
"I was born as Fiphele royalty, a princess, if you will. Not that this matters but," She gestured to the moonstone necklace that she wore about her neck. "All Fiphele royalty wear a necklace like this. It is a mark so that all may know who we are. Not that it's common knowledge here." But perhaps if one of her relatives showed up he would now know who they were. "My brother and I were both being trained to take over the throne but as you know there is only one throne and there were two of us. My father chose to let my brother take his place and as for me... well, he offered the position of a representative. Fiphele has long not had anyone to represent it and my father believed that it should be my job." Good enough for her, all the cushy food and shelter she could ever want. She'd exchange her old hard bed and fighting ferals anyday for what she had now. "So, you could say that I didn't know I wanted to be a politician until it was offered to me. I always thought I would be a queen but I have to say that I'm coming to love this job much more." There was something about working her way up and actually earning it that made her feel as if it was worth the effort.
"Your Pinap Juices." The waitress returned and dutifully placed their drinks on the tables before them. "I'll be back in a moment to take your orders." She promised before wandering away once more.
Nafretiri took a sip of her juice, eyes closing briefly as she savored the sweet flavor. "Ah, absolutely wonderful. How's yours?" Eyes opened as she looked at the bone-masked pokemon, waiting politely for his reply before finally letting out with her own inquiry. "I've bored you with my story now what about yours? What village did you come from and how did you decide on being an explorer?" One paw pulled the menu closer to herself but she didn't look down at it, not yet, she wanted to be able to listen to what he had to say.
He fidgeted. Ugh, ugh, ugh. The Liepard had called out his nervousness, and now, he was even more self-conscious. He wished he still had the signposts to cover his dumb face. And then she had suggested that they were equals-- even though she was a princess for Arceus's sake. Unnr really didn't know how to take the news, and he was worried about what emotions were showing on his face. Should he treat her any differently? No, Nafretiri wouldn't want that right-- that wasn't the purpose of her telling him something like that so casually, almost as if dismissively? She already knew that he was in awe of her, she didn't have anything to gain from revealing her past-- it didn't make sense to him. "Ah, just naturally a little fidgety-- you know, itching for battle, haha." It was the worst cover-up of his life, there was no way she'd buy it. "Sorry if that bothers you, I'll try my best to seem less nervous haha." What a dry chuckle, he needed to drink something. Redirect the conversation, redirect the conversation...
"I think it's amazing that you're a politician representing your country! Your brother on the throne can take all the blame when anything happens, you see, not that you would ever blame him for anything, but like, now, as a politician you might be able to get close to actual Pokemon and do more than paperwork behind royal walls-- I mean," he stumbled again. Dumb Unnr was dumb. What did he even mean? "I mean, I think I'm glad you're here. I'm glad you love this job."
The Cubone was immensely glad when the pinap juices were delivered to their table. Slowly, he sipped the sweet, sweet drink so that he wouldn't have to talk-- and so that he wouldn't run out of the drink anytime soon. In case of some emergency and brain shutdown, he would then have the excuse to shut himself up by taking a drink. "It was a great choice!" Unnr said, reaffirming the Liepard's excellent preference. Actually, he had never drank anything quite like this juice, and though it was particular, it wasn't outstandingly amazing nor disappointingly terrible. He considered that it might be an acquired taste, and he hoped to get used to it soon if this was the Liepard's favorite... Then, Unnr took a long sip to gather his thoughts and looked down at the menu so he wouldn't have to meet her eyes. "Well, I'm from Engatrar, but I don't really expect you to know that one, we're a tiny village but our region has been renamed several times whenever a new government or gang seizes control. As for being an explorer... I guess I wanted to do something new, something brave, something different." And it was strange because that was an answer he could ramble out forever in his head-- why he left his village, why he became an explorer-- and should have seem almost rehearsed, but instead it had come out simpler and shorter. And it was true, yes it was. He just hadn't expected that answer to come out of his mouth, but at least it was vague enough so that he didn't have to talk about his own family or past.
