Books. Books, everywhere. The tallest creature of the exploration group that had gathered together for this ancient ruin was unnerved by this place. It seemed as if the slightest movement would stir dust and dirt from the ground, some of the books could not even have their titles legible. Despite the curiosity that burned to open each and every book, she withheld herself. She was not much of a bookworm, but the number of stories and facts these strange books might have held within them enticed her.
It reminded her of her time with the scientists, before Indria had allowed her to step into the outside world on her own. All she had to do was continue to lie about her age, it was easy. The type:null was having fun, but there was something that bugged her about this particular situation...
Silence.
Whether it was a brief pause or a prolonged period without a word from the others, she found it quite discomforting. Thoughts crawled into her mind of what the others may have been thinking, thoughts she had assumed to be negative in some way due to her own lack of speech and general...well, existence.
So what should she do? She asked herself that very question. Her resolution, while a bit odd, was simple. "So, anyone know what that green stuff growing around here is?" she decided to ask with a gesture to some moss they happened to pass by. It was not that the moss was foreign to pokemon as a whole, but something she had not quite seen herself before. It reminded her of Indria in a way, a green plant-like...well, "thing" was all she could think of to describe it.

Up, left, down, right, up again, look around. It was all so wonderful! Dust caught in a soft beam of light, a book that hadn't been read for how long? Who knows? Exploring! But! Fragile, lots of unkempt areas, rot and mold and damp.
Oh, she was trying to stay quiet, even if her roving eyes and wagging tail gave other signs. The group was here for... well, safety? In numbers yeah? Clover was here as what, excited pup, explorer, medic. Knowledgeable on green stuff, that was her, and this. Was! An excuse to talk.
"It's called sheet moss! They can grow with no soil, isn't that amazing? There's this one called sawsbuck moss but it's actually a lichen, not a moss, people get those two mixed up all the time and-- they're a plant but they don't need dirt-- it's like..." Oh she was babbling, but gosh, any excuse. "Well I can't think of a good comparison but it's still neat, right? Oh don't, uh, don't worry about walking on it, th-they're hardy!" Finally taking a breath, her mouth shut with a small, but audible click.
There was moss, lichen, some mildew, everywhere. Rocks and dirt and books, nothing was safe from the green-grey grasp. No doubt she'd have to dry out and carefully (so carefully!) brush off what had taken hold on the resting books around them. Oh, had she... or uh... did the other two know how to handle the books? She should ask. She should ask. Later? Later. She'd just gone and word vomitted on strangers, maybe give them, uh, a chance to... yeah. Clover was gonna fFocus on the cute soft moss on her paws, not rising embarrassment.

Kino
A cough or two filled the air as the third member of the gathered exploration group stepped inside the ruins. She hadn't been expecting the air inside to be so musty and had ended up with a mouthful of dust.
Kino initially ignored the others to sweep her eyes across the room, taking in the oldness of the place - the dusty books, the ruins, the way moss was growing on everything... the Umbreon found everything to be very beautiful, and to be quite frank way more than she had expected from this dungeon. At first, she had assumed it'd just be full of books and nothing else withstanding, but she was definitely throwing that assumption herself now that she was actually here for the first time.
She found herself already growing irritated at Clover's response, the Riolu's words cutting through her own thoughts and distracting her from her admiration. Kino resisted snapping a reply, instead swallowing most of her irritation; starting a fight among each other was rather stupid, especially at the start of a dungeon exploration. And besides, CLover seemed to be embarrassed about it.
"So, where do we start?" Kino asked, padding over to the closest book from her and peering at it. She didn't dare touch it, not willing to test how fragile it was.
An answer she had wanted, so an answer she had gotten. The monster's brow furrowed beneath that mask of her's, though not only did the weighted armor restrain her strength but concealed her expression. The most one could see in the dark abyss the holes offered were the eyes that could only stare back at the outsiders with a spark of curiosity and slight confusion to them.
The darkly colored riolu spoke, but Kala had been lost in the words almost as soon as the fighting type began to speak. Sheet moss? Sawsbuck Moss? Lichen? The beast remained silent as the riolu spoke on until she finally silenced herself. Kala had pieced together from the riolu's words that they were all plants, but a plant that does not need dirt? How could that be? Unless it was a pokemon...
Was Indria a Sawsbuck Moss? She thought Indria was a Leafeon?
"Ah," she acknowledged the riolu's burst of excitement, a bit desperate to keep the fact that the answer had just spawned more questions on the down low. Fortunately, the third member of the group had a change of subject for them to talk about as Kino had asked where they should start. It was an excellent question, but unfortunately, Kala did not have a confident answer.
Kala did not respond at first, instead, she approached a small collection of books stacked on top of each other that looked to be just as tall as the riolu. They looked as if they had not been touched in years. She lifted a claw and examined her own insect-like talons. They were not at all good for holding. Should...should she try anyways?
The normal type was hesitant. She glanced back at the others briefly before she spoke up, "I'm not sure...start reading?" she asked, a claw moving to grip one of the books at the top of the small pile. The book ended up dropping to the floor with a loud clap that echoed in the ancient ruins of the library. The type:null jumped back from the unexpected noise she had created, the feathers around the base of her neck underneath the mask began to rise from being startled. She froze to the spot, listening. Were there any hostiles in the area? Had she just gotten their attention?
Well, no one had snapped at her. Couldn't. Of gone over that poorly? Yeah, she'll recenter herself on that thought, a paw working on her scarf. Settle, start anew. Start where? Er...
A good start would've been noticing a set of disgruntled hooting at this sunny time of day. A good start would've been remembering what kind of pokemon may call this place home. A good start would've been good but hey, here they all were.
"Whoa!" Startled by the sudden noise as well, Clover hopped backed, her ears laying flat, ears flicking up, ears swiveling but not focusing on anything useful. "...oh, no, it's fine, really. Uh... a start? Do we, uh... do we have a specific..." she trailed off and stared at nothing. Trail of thought? Moving as fast as the moss beneath her. Solid as the dust that just made her sneeze.
This is a mission, not a leisure day floated through her mind like the silent shadow that passed behind her. Wait, this isn't a mission. Sure she was with another recruit and a null, but this wasn't an official, rule set, protocol following romp now was it?
"W-well, it's a library! There's a system in place. What do you want to find?" It was polite to ask others first, as much as she wanted to dive in and find something or other on plants or medicine or music would be nice...

"Start reading? Okay," Kino breathed, thinking aloud. She was aware she had done it, but she wasn't sure if the others had heard. She didn't linger on the though, however, instead taking the type:null's suggestion as a cue to grasp the book gently in her mouth, slide it out the shelf and deposit it on the ground. Upon closer examination it appeared to be a recipe book relating the the various combinations of berries. Kino pawed it open out of curiosity, but she found it to be uninteresting.
The Umbreon had just put the book back where she'd found it when a sudden clap of sound echoed throughout the ruins. Kino flinched, but other than her tensing up and her her long, round ears instinctively pinning back as a reflex against the loud sound, there were no outward signs to her surprise. Once her heart had stopped racing so much, Kino turned towards the others to see what had happened.
It turned out Kala had knocked a book to the floor. "Yeah, no worries," Kino assured, backing up Clover's words in the process. She looked around again, trying to see if anything caught her eye, book or hostile pokemon or something. "Uh..," truth be told, Kino hadn't thought about exactly what kind of book she wanted to find. She'd kinda just... hoped to stumble across something worthwhile. "To be honest, I don't really know."
It seems that she was easily forgiven for the noise her carelessness had caused. She was relieved as her muscles began to relax ever so slightly. The Umbreon and taken a look at her book while Kala kept with hers. The riolu, meanwhile, gave a rather bright idea. A library should have a system in place! Unfortunately for the riolu, Kala had never been to a library before. While she understood what "System" had meant, she did not know why the reason that was "It's a library" was enough to suggest that there was one.
Despite her ignorance on the subject, she remained silent and carefully lifted the cover with a talon as she listened to the others. She examined what words she could read carefully along with the images. She could not quite make sense of them as whole sentences, but she could piece together what was being said from the pictures and key words she did know.
Oh, the riolu had asked a question. The Umbreon had responded with a rather lacking answer, so she decided that perhaps she should say something to give them a more direct goal. "I just want to see some of these Tomes I've been told about." She backed away from the book slighty as she struggled to get a better look with the mask that inhibited her so. Just as she was about to start actually trying to read rather than glance around, the one creature that did not forgive her for the noise made its presence known.
A shadow dropped down from afar as it suddenly swooped towards the null. A loud screech at the last second caused her to jump back and away from the attacker. The monster's claws slammed into the book she had been trying to read and crunched the pages together before it took off once more with the book in tow. Crumpled and torn pages fell from the book as the creature gave another loud screech before the creature of the darkness gracefully tilted its wings to turn around. The book was released and dropped to the floor below, utterly destroyed.
She could see the talons of the creature were open once more as the avian moved back for another strike against on of the party members!
"Look out!" she cried.

Thankfully the sudden shock of seeing the noctowl swoop stopped Clover's natural fight instinct - the one that went 'set yourself on fire with Blaze Kick'. Cause. Yeah. All those books. Would've been a great event to add to her record - burned down a library of ancient knowledge.
One step, two step, quite a few more steps back and away, Clover wasn't sure what to do. Ok, first: no fire. Fire bad. Second: no one was handling the books properly and that gosh darn bird just destroyed one and everyone was going to get a stern talking to after this. But. Right now? Clover settled into a lower, steady stance.
"Why are you att--" Cut off by an Echoed Voice, Clover's ears flicked flat to her head, trying not to close her eyes in a wince and lose track of the noctowl. "Attacking us?" Had the noctowl even heard her? It seemed quite content staying aloft and screeching angrily, even if the first blow had been physical.
One Echoed Voice could lead to more. Were they feral? Were they going to have a feral flock on them? Was that why no one came here oh no she didn't really think this through why didn't she ask more and not get caught up in thinking about books and adding to the bookshelf and why--
..and as a fighting type... well. Have you ever tried to punch a bird?

Kino
Oh boy. Kino wanted to disappear somewhere, perhaps under a pile of books. She felt embarrassed that she'd forgotten about the Tomes, and them pretty much being the reason the three military members had come to the Bibliotheca Amaranthine. But the others didn't pay much mind to her, so a potentially uncomfortable situation (for her) was avoided. Still, Kino quickly selected a random book to distract her.
This book was marginally more interesting than the other one the Umbreon had checked out. It was far more ancient and faded, making the words and the pictures difficult to read and see. Kino managed to get the gist of what was written, yet before she could get very far she was interrupted by the Noctowl's screech. For the second time in the past few minutes Kino pinned her ears back against the harsh sound.
The book was abandoned as Kino switched her attention to their opponent, agreeing silently with Clover's question, but she couldn't do much else as an Echoed Voice made her pin her ears yet again to the sides of her head, and this time curl in on herself a little as the soundwaves washed over her. Ugh, Kino hated noise so much, and for good reason. She swore on any god that if there were more echoed voices and/or loud noises she was going to lose it.

KALA KORZINA , Clover | 228 | why do i always feel like my posts are bad ;n; also i'm not sure how much we're allowed to control the situation/noctowl?
With a rush of feathers and wings the noctowl had finished its business with the book before taking cover from a more distanced range. The riolu had spoken out to the flying type, but the owl was not at all about to listen as it had instead attempted to silence the darker colored pokemon with an Echoed Voice. Kala suffered the as the sound bounced around her helm and into her ears. She could do nothing to even protect her ears other than to let out an enraged bellow of her own as if to drown out the sound with her own. She failed, of course, but there was a star for effort.
Kala shot a glare up in the direction of the creature that had attacked them. The noctowl had attacked them, so what did that make it? An enemy. The Type:Null knew she must have been expected to do something, but the owl was far too high for her to reach even if she were to make a jump for it. She kept her eyes trained on the monster of the skies with a low growl...if a Type:Null could growl that is.
The noctowl was not alone, however, as another voice echoed down upon the group with a bombastic tone much stronger than the last. The Type:Null cried out once more, her own Rage building. She glared up at one of the two owls, daring them to come down again.
"This needs to stop!" she commented to the other two, though she hoped at least one of them would have some sort of way to lure them down.

Hostile, deeeeeeefinately hostile, oh that was some top grade hostility happening right here. Looking to the other two, neither of them seemed to have an idea on what to do. Not for the first or last time Clover was cursing her lack of offensive moves - she was by no means the first to jump into a scrap, but...
If talking didn't work, what was next on the checklist? Punching them wasn't going to work. Shooting something wasn't going to work - neither Clover, Kino, or Kala seemed to have ranged attacks (whoops!). So that left using an orb (that she had none of), or a tactical retreat.
"Diplomacy has failed! I suggest--" Clover yipped and stepped aside twin beams of Night Shade carved through sheet moss and zig zagged passed "--running away?!"
She could kick herself mentally later for making that come out too much like a question, too much like a coward. For the moment there was dodging of angry birds who didn't want to talk. Angry feral birds that seemed to at least register their targets had no way of reaching them for the time being, and were happy to screech Echo Voice and shoot laser eye beams Night Shade from afar.
Steadily working backwards, not wanting to take her eyes off the noctowls, Clover stopped beside Kino. Noticing how the umbreon had curled into herself slightly, she wasn't... exactly sure what to do. There was loud noises, flicks of aura pulsing with anger and fear. Fear? From the noct-- no, every aura was different, she couldn't assume.. Now as not the time.
Clover had to take a risk, no matter how much she didn't want to - reaching a paw over, she laid it against the should of Kino, trying to keep her voice soft yet audible over the noctowls above. "Kino, Kino, we have to move Kino, c'mon."

Kino
There seemed to be no end to the noise, the cacophony instead increasing when another Noctowl joined the party. Kino wanted to shut them up so badly, and she might have tried something whether it worked or not had one of the birds not screeched another Echoed Voice her way, and how could sound hurt so much? The Umbreon was lucky she hadn't been hit with anything else, really, because she was a sitting duck.
She nearly missed that Clover was talking to her despite feeling a paw on her shoulder, but she realized in time to make out that they were fleeing. She could hardly even hear clearly what the Riolu was saying, but fortunately she did. Kino nodded, uncurling herself but keeping her ears pinned back, grateful that the other pokemon had kept her voice soft.
Without waiting longer for a cue to get away, Kino broke into a run the opposite direction from the Noctowl. She had tried to pick a path among the books that seemed the best route, but it was hard to tell. She tried to keep her pace reasonable, hoping that Kala and Clover would follow her or at least see the direction she was headed.
Bring it on, the type:null was ready to fight these two owls! She paced impatiently with eyes that hungered for the violence she had been built for. She cared not if they were stronger or had some sort of advantage with ranged attacks, she was ready to sit there and wait for them to land. They surely had to get tired at some point! Though she heavily underestimated a Noctowl's ability to remain in flight. She snorted and shook her head threateningly, though, to her seeming misfortune, the other two had talked about running.
Run? Wasn't that logical in a fight? They had to run towards the enemy if they wanted to hit them otherwise the enemy would just move, right? It took her a brief second to piece together that the two had meant to run away from beasts that threatened them. Why? The normal type was confused as she spotted a flash of the dark colored pelt of the umbreon make a break for it.
"What?" she questioned with obvious confusion to her tone, though the umbreon had already bolted. The confliction in plans threw her off of her game as the screeches suddenly became much more threatening to her with one less party member present to assist them. She looked to the riolu before following the trail the umbreon had bolted off into with her eyes, then her glance landed back on the owls. Okay, guess they were...leaving? This was not something that had been covered in her training thus far. She was a guard, she was supposed to run towards the danger, not away.
The Type:null did not make a break for it, at least not just yet. She still faced the noctowls' direction with threatening growls and squawks of her own as she backed away slowly despite the urge to move forward. If the Riolu ran, she would most certainly follow behind. If they were going to run away, it seemed to her like the most logical course of action as a "guard" was to make sure that she would be the one to be attacked if the avians decided to pursue.
Well. Kino was alert enough to book it (ha). That was one safe. Er. But! Black pokemon running into unknown blackness alone and with no way to contact and oooooh didn't think this one through. A noctowl gave an angry screech at Kino's escape, shooting off ungracefully, knocking dust off the rafters above and covering the unsafe sounding groaning from the rotting wood. Geez she wasn't really-- she didn't know-- what now?
"Right. Ok. What?" Clover matched Kala's confusion. "Ok yes we needtomoveKala!" she yelled over her shoulder as she tried to keep sight of Kino, paws over her head as something was dislodged from above - sticks? Was that a bit of egg shell she stomped underpaw?
So first to scoot off was Kino. Next was a noctowl swooping after. Clover had thrown herself after the pair without much thought (besides a prolonged internal yell of panic which did not count). Maybe they could lose the noctowls in the twists and turns of the deeper parts of the dungeon. Maybe they'll lose each other and die a horrible death. Clover didn't know. Clover's anxiety was cheering on thinking about the latter option though.

Kino
She was starting to feel a little guilty that she'd run off like that. What if her once-off partners didn't see where she went? Or didn't follow her?
A screech broke Kino from her thoughts, and a quick glance behind her clarified that one of the Noctowl had followed her, though she also spotted Clover's shape further behind. "Great. Just great," the Umbreon muttered, diving behind the nearest stack of books in a bid to hide from the Noctowl. It didn't work, and all the action managed to accomplish was halting the chase. Not for long, as the flying-normal-type launched itself at Kino in a tackle attack.
Kino tried to dodge, but she'd noticed the attack too late and was flung into the pile of books she had attempted to hide behind. Most of the books fell apart upon impact, but they were not important right now. What was important was getting to her paws quickly, before she was attacked again.
The Noctowl must've realized its Echoed Voice wasn't as powerful as it could be, because it launched another tackle at the Umbreon. This time, she was ready for it and sidestepped out of the way, launching her own counter-attack as soon as she could after that. Her quick attack landed square on the bird's wing, causing it to lose altitude and land clumsily on the ground. Hopefully it would stay there long enough for the others to attack it - speaking of which, Kino was reminded that she wasn't alone, bringing her attention back to her surroundings.
