the worst case scenario is you
The air felt cool, a softness from what the psuedo-dragon had learned was called a 'breeze'; tickling at her dark scales. Voices carried as easily as they might have in the caverns of home, the sounds of children and their parents. Of couples and singles, mingling parties of pokemon... Surrounding all of it was a light still so foreign to Karma that it was hard to tell if it was 'mystical', 'magical', or something as plain as 'something new'. Sunlight. The heat warmed her body more than her inner flames ever could, the light at the tip of her tail barely more than an ember compared to the great shining orb she tried so hard to stare at. Dazzling, blinding- it was all still so new and strange. Awkward even. But it was not unusual, or at least the wannabe-dragon hoped not; considering her totaling days within this civilization of 'Invictus' was amount to... around two and a half days. The very first day she had gone straight to the administration building, 'Town Hall' they called. Such a strange structure, an odder sense of leadership that she felt she may never get used to. Karma had been there for the majority, if not the entirety; of the first day. The faint memories of a welcoming... inn? Hall? What had they called it? She'd been too tired and overwhelmed to remember it straight... But the bed was soft. Softer than any moss-bed her mother could make. Unless furs were involved.
The great beast stood idly on one of the patches of green running throughout the entirety of this 'Memorial Park', intending to familiarize herself with both the people and the kingdom's history. There had been an original intention to visit the museum itself but... things were distracting. Such as said 'grass', something a young pokemon had took it upon themselves to tell her about. Now, the same pokemon along with a smaller cluster of youngster circled around her with questions as frenzied as the ones in her own head. Karma hadn't the time to sort them out, only remembering a few back-and-forths such as: 'What's your name?', 'Where are you from?', 'Why're you black?', and 'What's that thing on your tail?'
She'd managed to answer the majority for the most part... at least she thought so. Hoped so. If she hadn't then the children showed no signs of boredom or giving her some relief. Though that was probably a good thing by her own standards, already knowing she'd have lost herself in a daze and stare at the sky till dusk took them. Between the eagerness to take flight, the wonderment of staring at each and every little thing that intrigued her, and not wishing to disappoint the foreign youngsters huddling together within reach of her wings- well, it was busy in more ways than one. Suppose this was an easier way of interacting with the locals, knowing what the 'future' of Invictus looked like in its more literal form. Karma couldn't help the awkward yet genuine grin on her maw as she continued to play 'Can you answer enough?'.
There had always been an hour or two a day where duty did not call members of the military in these times of peace, usually referred to as stand-by duty though that rarely applied. It was in these times of relaxation that those Raiden called his comrades, though he barely knew them, pursued their desires and he was no exception. Though unlike them, he was not really interested in visiting a bar, enjoying a drink and playing games like darts or billiard. He preferred being by himself, stuck in his own thoughts while an strawberry ice cream was stuck between his fingers.
And how could he not on this lovely spring day? It was a mild 17°C, a gentle breezing making it feel colder than it actually was, the sun was shining upon everything like the source of life it was, and life around him was flourishing. Of course he favored winter and a cold night, but that did not mean he could not relish the opposite, especially some ice cream at hand. And knowing he was part of protecting this serenity made him feel warm and proud inside, a purpose well worth striving for in his eyes.
Usually, Raiden would have kept to himself, enjoying the walk and the strawberry ice cream, but something peculiar caught his attention. A bunch of young Pokémons in their first evolutionary stage were gathered around a charizard, and not an ordinary one. She had the same 'affliction' that mader her stuck out like him, melanism, and the children seemed curious about her because of it. The black pikachu was not too curious himself, but it of course was his duty to make sure this would not get out of hand. Curiosity was fine and all, but privacy was also to be respected.
Approaching the group, he stood a couple of meters behind the children, observing everything with a calm smile while occasionally taking a bite from his ice cream. Seemed peaceful thus far, nothing that might escalate. Of course the crest on his purple scarf would clarify that he was part of the military, but his calm stance also made clear that he had no impetus of interfering with anything. If anything, he was simply here to make sure everything was fine.
Was he a kid, or was he not? Certainly in many ways, that was a... tricky question to answer. His habits, in many ways, lent to that of a youngster: distaste for authority, recklessness, high energy. Yet he was controlled... relatively speaking. More so than some, at least, never mind the various bits of knowledge he'd picked up from running off or being carted off this way or that over his life.
Never mind that at 18, he still lived at an orphanage...
Ah, but that was then. That was his place to get meals, to stay for the night, to occasionally help out in order to keep secure his place there. Now was his time to just... be free. To run, aimlessly as he wanted. To observe his surroundings, catch a few varying points of interest. Come to a slow pause at a sound of hushed laughter where he just passed, at the sight of a gaggle of younglings -- well, younger than him -- pestering a Charizard. A black Charizard. Was she... not wholly comfortable with young ones? It was a vague expression Valen got judging from the expression on her face... well then, perhaps he could help her out a little.
Or add some fuel to the fire and see them start to turn on him, he'd little doubt, given the silvery white, fluffy fur he was covered in, in stark contrast to the larger fire lizard's scales... or, indeed, the fur of the Pikachu that had shown up, and was now standing idly by out of 'harm's way', as it were.
Well that was no fun.
"Slow down a little, alright? You're giving the poor lady a hard time," the Eevee calmly spoke, in the manner of someone very used to dealing with children. An inevitability, in fact, considering how many orphanages he'd lived in through his life. "Or, if you want to keep going fast, I bet he could keep you plenty busy with that. After all, Pikachus are known for being quite quick, aren't they?" he suggested, the slightest hint of a smirk on his face as he tilted his head momentarily toward the Pikachu that had been standing by... military of some sort, if he wasn't mistaken by some certain signs. But then, what did he know about that?
"Or... if you've got that much energy to burn, then maybe a little game of keep-away? See if you can run from the lovely Charizard and tough-looking Pikachu... if they're up for it, of course," he suggested, a grin starting to spread across his face. Oh, how he loved just running... but hardly had he forgotten his intent over here, to alleviate a bit of the trouble the Charizard seemed to be having. At least this, perhaps, gave her an out if she wanted it... assuming the kids didn't pester her too much regardless.

Their questioning had begun to grow more and more heated, each new sentence replaced with yet another before the charizard could even manage to think of an answer. She felt herself standing there dumbly with ten such question swooping right over her head, her face unable to hide the conflicting needs. The need to answer and the need to figure out just was she was going to do. There was a moment when the beast thought there might have been some respite as a shinx stepped forward, clearing his throat with his tail stuck high up in the air. The other pokemon hushed themselves, well; as hushed as a chorus of giggles could be. The blue-black cat beckoned her with his paw, looking this way and that in a most shift manner; a paw up ready for a whisper. None-the-wiser, Karma stuck her head down to his level only to find paws at her maw, clamping on like a sticky web even when Karma brought her head half-way back up.
That must have been a sign, something that blinded the Charizard from the newly approached pikachu even as her wings flailed open with surprise, fluttering slightly to maintain the balance against new bodies trying to hop at her legs and still partially lowered neck. "Wai- stop ple-" The lizard pleaded, her quieted voice trying its best to maintain its softness through the confused growls. They were fast, that was for sure. Plucking one little kricketot off and another sandshrew would take its place, whatever was gently set on the ground quickly drove into a barrage of laughter and the attempt renewed. It was an effort to keep her tail stiff-stuck out, keeping the flame well away from the overly excited youngsters.
Then another one came, this one Karma noticed. Whether they were a child or not was to be seen but by the lizard's standard, she was glad to see a sane mind. Or hear one rather as the first shinx was half-blinding her in its attempts to grab her horns. Only a few children settled to listen to the proposition, half of those willing enough to hop off from their perches to stare at the pikachu with threatening grabby hands.
The half on Karma still let out excited little sounds of glee. "Tag?! A growlithe barked, its tail wagging tickling at his jungle gym's leg. A few more eyes stopped to stare down at the aforementioned pikachu, looking between the three of whom were most likely there to-be victims and already victim. "Let's play!" a grounded child cried, "You join too whitey!" one from Karma's shoulder called. Two of its lower pals made threatening grabby gestures too, perfectly in sync. "We'll pounce on you if you don't!" They teased, relieving Karma's arm with a single hop down. Not all of them went down, others clinging and waiting just as Karma sat there near motionless. It felt like one of those 'red-light, green-light' situations, the children ready to pounce or flee at any given notice. Karma was merely glad that they stopped moving for the most part, already knowing she had been voluntold into this new situation by that determined look in the shinx's eye.
The children were becoming more impetuous and obviously a problem too much for the female charizard to handle. It seemed to Raiden they had not learned proper courtesy yet, likely due to neglectful parents or general hostility towards social norms. Of course that was not acceptable despite the patience of the dragon-like Pokémon, and he would have stepped in immediately if not for others doing so first. He did not recognize the silver eevee despite being a military as well, but his methods seemed effective if problematic.
Still, he could deny the eevee's charisma that caught the childrens' attention, but now it was upon the both of them to be a distraction for the young minds of these Pokémons. "Of course." He went along with the eevee, his stance being that of a proud pikachu. "Nobody's faster than a Pikachu." He asserted with a cocky grin, hoping that would gain him the childrens' attention. From personal experience, he knew how much a challenge can grab one's attention, and indeed it seemed to work. Many of the children turned away from the charizard with the intent to use the two of them as tools for their fun. Of course he could scare them off with force, but that was just plain renegade.
To demonstrate his speed in the hope it would distract the children from the likely slower eevee, he hunkered down a little and whispered. "Quick Attack." Just as he did that he vanished from the spot he just stood on. A dark blur in a white aura dashed away from the spot, almost instantly reappearing a couple of meters to the side away from the eevee. Scratching his nose, he chuckled, carrying a playfully challenging grin. "Think you can grab me?" He tempted fate. Strangely enough... he was actually enjoying himself. Was this what having friends was like?
Ah, children... looked like he was about just in time, too. Certainly, he'd considered it rather inevitable that they'd soon stop questioning, and start climbing, but any later and... well. Already the Charizard was having quite the hard time of it, that much was clear. Heck, the Eevee himself could even take some pride in the fact that he'd never been that bad.
Well... probably. He'd usually just been following his father and kept (mostly) out of trouble for his early youth anyway, before wandering along mostly on his own.
"Oh? You'll pounce on me, will you?" Valen somewhat proudly smirked, his naturally expressive tail already shifting slightly, ready to run at any given moment. To outright dart off, no less, at a point he was confident these kids wouldn't be able to follow, as used to running and eluding others as he was. "Well c'mon then, if that's the way you want to play things. Some of you, all of you. You lot especially; can't play keep-away with someone who's not even moving, right? So c'mon, down and counting to ten, all of you! We can't start the game without doing it right, can we?" he gently insisted, in a certain manner of putting his foot down all the same. Much as he wanted to do this, as his expression and mannerisms made little secret of, it still had to be done right, didn't it? Never mind hopefully getting them to stop harassing the poor Charizard as much.
