The riolu finally ran and she soon followed. One of the Noctowls had chased after Kino, while the other lingered behind. Kala pushed herself to run faster, but she could barely keep up with the riolu as the heavy armor weighted her down. Fortunately, or rather at least to the eye of the optimist, the chase had been temporarily halted as the Noctowl moved in for the attack. It attacked the umbreon with a harsh Tackle that the dark type had failed to dodge.
A brief ripple of anger rose within Kala at her failure as a guard. The Noctowl was forced into a clumsy landing by the Umbreon's Quick Attack as she gave a sharp and eager yet strange noise befitting of a chimera such as herself. The noctowl had begun to flap its wings in order to gain lift and bring itself off the ground. The null bunched up her legs before she jumped as high as she could with the weighted armor, her insect-like talons outstretched. Her claws felt feathers brush past them, panic began to rise, but success was evident when she managed to grab the Noctowl by its feet. She dragged the normal type back down to ground level.
The invisible energy that was aura began to flare as she began her assault of Rage on the Noctowl. She kept the creature pinned as she moved to remove what made this creature such a problem in the first place: the wings...or rather, the feathers on the wings as they shielded the limb from total damage. If it couldn't fly, it couldn't be as much of a problem, right?
The Noctowl screeched in pain helplessly as it was pinned and assaulted. It took quite a bit to break through the pain of merciless removal of feathers, but the Noctowl managed to gather its thoughts long enough to blast the Type:Null off of it with a weak telekinetic force known as Confusion.
Kala was thrown to her side and forced to release the noctowl, but not without a few more feathers in her claws. She forced herself up once more as the light brown tools of flight fell around her. She released those she held in her talons and attempted to dash forward with another attack, however, her mind had been damaged temporarily by the strange psychic force. The room moved, she could see two umbreons, two riolu, and...two noctowl? Did they get help and did the other noctowl follow as well?
Kala had never felt the effects of confusion before, nor had it really been explained to her. She struggled to stay standing while the room seemed to rock back and forth. She would move one way to stay with the room but catch herself before she truly fell. The null felt a bit sick to her stomach as she tried to comprehend what was going on, but thinking straight only seemed to hurt just as much as the Noctowl's attack. She wanted to just lie down and wait for the room to stop spinning, but that was not an option!
She had already failed her job so far, she was not about to "fail" again if she could help it!
One confirmed follower, but can it still fly?

Kino
Kala beat Kino in attacking the Noctowl again. Seeing as the Type:Null seemed to be handling it fine, Kino took the moment to gather herself, glancing around quickly for Clover. Kino had lost sight of the Riolu, but the Umbreon had no more time to ponder about that when the raging battle currently taking place grabbed her attention. Just in time to see Kala being thrown off and away from her opponent.
As quickly as she could get her body to move, Kino dashed towards the Noctowl, the Quick Attack making the Umbreon a blur. With the Noctowl starting to be worn down, Kino was able to land her attack square on the Noctowl's chest. However, this left the Umbreon in pecking distance. The Noctowl was also not wasting its opportunity, a solid Peck slicing a shallow gash across Kino's back before she got away.
Instead of charging right back at the bird, Kino stayed a safeish distance away to regroup. With a chance now to actually study the Type:Null and notice the effects of confusion, Kino decided to go defensive for now. From the past few minutes, the Umbreon could see that the flying-type was too much for just one of them to handle.

The world refused to correct itself as she struggled just to face the opponent. The feathers of Noctowl floated down from the air, one gently made its way into her helm. The Type:Null shoot her head fiercely in an attempt to dispell the confusion and get the nuisance of a feather out of her mask. A growl echoed from her mask as she gave up and attempted to launch herself at the Noctowl once more. The bird attempted to take off but failed to get any proper lift as flight proved to be quite difficult now that a large majority of major flight feathers had either been damaged or removed entirely.
While Kino had chosen to hang back and wait for Kala to recover, Kala had a different idea. She moved in to tackle the Noctowl once more before she successfully landed a strike against the bird's chest. The noctowl was knocked back by the attack, but it rose once more to give an irritated screech at the two. It had begun to hop away, wings flared out as it attempted to take flight again and again. It wanted to flee now that it had lost the advantage of the skies, though Kala only prepared herself for a second assault as she tried to pick which of the two Noctowls she saw were the real ones. She would have thought there actually were two if not for the fact that their wings seemed to overlap with one another.
She had no idea what the Noctowl had done to her, but she was not happy with this. Her stomach twisted as she felt sick, she really hoped nothing would come up.
"Which one...?" she growled to herself as she had completely forgotten that she had allies there to assist her if she needed help.

Kino
Kino was rather surprised that Kala moved to tackle to Noctowl, but in hindsight she really shouldn't have, considering her companion was a type: null. Kala at least landed the attack on the flying-type and avoided hurting herself in her confusion.
Kino's attention was held by the null for a few moments more when she asked, "Which one...?" Kino wondered if Kala even realized she was confused, but then she chuckled to herself at how absurd that thought sounded.
As the Umbreon was distracted, she almost missed their opponent attempt to flee. On any other day, Kino would've let it go, but she still harbored angry feelings towards it for its earlier echoed voice (regardless of the fact she couldn't remember which Noctowl did what) and so Kino launched herself across the passage in a Pursuit of the downed flying-type. Unfortunately, the attack missed as the Noctowl managed to pull itself into the air and fly away.
Kino glared at it as it flew away, but there was nothing more she could do to it and at least it wasn't coming back. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, the Umbreon padded back to Kala. "Are you okay?" she asked, considering confusion wasn't a great state to be in even though it was temporary.
The "duo" of noctowls fled, but that seemed to only agitate the null as she was left behind. She could spot a dark shape move to attack the two only to miss as the flying type got away. The room was steadily becoming still as her balance returned to her slowly but surely. The Type:Null had given up on on a stand and had lowered herself closer to the ground with her fore-legs lowered and her hind legs seated.
The umbreon, Kino, had asked if she was okay. She wanted to say "Yes" and move on with it like Indria would likely have wanted her to, but "No" was a more proper answer. What had just happened to her? She was angry, but she was also fearful. It was apparent that the room had not suddenly started to move as Kino would not have asked that question if that were the case.
Instead of admittance to either a "Yes" or a "No" the type:null instead decided to respond to the question with yet another question, "What happened? It felt like the room was spinning. Why did the enemies flee?"
So many questions had left the type:null in a different state of confusion. This was not the kind to distort her mind and warp it to cause her harm whilst attacking, but the more natural kind as she attempted to figure out what that was. The Type:Null could "feel" the room begin to steady itself as she looked to Kino.

Kino
"You were hit by a Confusion," Kino explained, "and it confused you. That's why the room appeared to be spinning." Kino left her explanation there, sort of assuming it would suffice. Then she added, answering the null's last question. "Maybe they fled because they couldn't take us anymore? I can't really answer that."
As the adrenaline wore off and the dust settled from the fight, the realization that Clover wasn't around fully hit. "Hey, where'd Clover go?" Kino asked, glancing around for the Riolu. Although concerned for their third member, Kino decided she'd be able to handle herself.
So, the umbreon went over to a bookshelf and scanned it, searching for a tome. Her attention was then grabbed by a book that seemed thicker than the others around it, and Kino was distracted enough to pad over to it and examine it. It had a dark, worn cover, and when Kino gently pried it open with a paw she discovered it was an encyclopedia of some sort. She couldn't read the writing, but there were pictures on the pages that had not been damaged.
The umbreon briefly explained why she had felt the way she had felt just moments before. Confusion, she knew of the term, but not to such a degree and severity where it had hindered her ability to do the simplest of tasks. She concluded that she should be wary in the future, as such an effect would certainly be a dangerous downfall if it were to occur again.
The dark type also failed to know exactly why the opponents had fled, but all that mattered was that the danger had now passed. The null finally gathered the sense of balance required to stand as the eeveelution requested the location of the strange little riolu that had followed them into this massive dungeon they had willingly thrown themselves into.
The null looked around herself, not in search of books, but in search of the charge she had felt slightly responsible for. Where had the riolu gone? Why was she gone? The mind biologically programmed to pull together solutions to issues dealt to it was put to work, though her imagination took over a bit more than logic had, not to her knowledge.
She had to have been kidnapped! Why else would the avian enemies have left so suddenly?
"...Did they perhaps take her?" she spoke with a voice of concern as her movements began to grow a bit quick. She continued to look around her as she grew desperate to be proven wrong. What if someone had nabbed her while they were busy fighting? All of this was merely a means of distraction while they grabbed one of their temporary allies!
She looked over to the Umbreon to see that she had been in the midst of reading a book. Kala found herself a bit...confused. Why was she so casually reading a book when one of their own was missing entirely? She spoke nothing of it, but still, the questioning gaze in her eyes failed to obscure what her words desired to speak.

Kino
The umbreon heard Kala's reply, however, she was too absorbed with her book to answer right away. After a few more moments of paging through and looking at the pictures within the book, Kino closed it and turned to the type: null. "I don't think so," she replied, "The one who chased us didn't appear to be holding anything... and we ran away from the other one." Now that the chaos with the two noctowl had calmed, Kino was starting to regret fleeing like she did. Perhaps the outcome of the fight would be different had they held their ground?
The thoughts did not last long before Kino shook them away. The noctowls' echoed voice put her out of the fight when it started, and put the group at a slight disadvantage despite the even odds. And besides, the past was the past and what happened happened; either way there was no going back now. "Although I am a bit concerned for her, I'm sure she can take care of herself," Kino continued, almost as an afterthought. "I say we press forward. Keep going until we've passed through the entire library."
She had trouble believing that the umbreon had passed over the disappearance of their friend so quickly without a second motive, but supposed there was nothing they could do about it. She did not exactly shrug it off, but instead hesitantly agreed to the words of the dark type. It seemed wrong to just not search for the lost ally, though the umbreon seemed pretty sure that the riolu could care for herself. Kala had even considered the idea of splitting ways with the eeveelution to go find them herself, but a second thought had judged the idea to be more risk than it was worth.
She had failed to do anything against the Noctowl, she was not strong enough to simply go out alone. Not to mention she had made it her mission to defend the group while within this library. The type:null exhaled softly and nodded, "I suppose you are right. It would be best not to use more supplies than planned..." She had spoken more to reason with herself than to reinforce the umbreon's point.
The Type:Null surveyed the area, it seemed as if they only had one way to go from where they had come from. The Null could spy a small corridor split off in ahead, however, which would mean that they would have to choose whether to continue forward or take the corridor. Ever so insecure, she would simply leave the choice up to the Umbreon. This was the first time she had ever been in someplace considered to be a Mystery Dungeon with such a threat level posed from the inhabitants. She and the Umbreon would have to be cautious now that it was simply the two of them.
She said no more, as she instead waited for the umbreon to take lead. She always was more of a "number two" when it cames to things like this...

Kino
The umbreon began walking once Kala had given her reply, but the dark-type gave a nod beforehand to acknowledge Kala. Kino sensed the type:null's hesitation to lead, although she was in the dark as to the reasons why, not that they concerned her. But, no matter the details, Kino wasn't planning on hanging around in one place for too long in case the noctowl came back - or more enemies made themselves known to the duo.
There was a split in the corridor ahead that the umbreon could make out. She slowed as she neared it, giving herself time to analyze each direction and get a sense of her bearings, as well as determine the 'safest' route in terms of how likely they were to encounter enemies. Kino was also aware of how much more difficult it would be to travel through the library now that they'd lost an ally.
Once she'd reached the split, Kino glanced back to make sure Kala was still following before she headed down the corridor leading right. Both had seemed more or less the same, so the umbreon had decided to favor heading to the right.
Silence between the two. Neither of them had spoken beyond that, but there was really no need to. What were they to do, chatter away in the midst of a dungeon as if it were a stroll through a park? It was a terrible idea! Still though, it kind of irked Kala. They had been active so far in the dungeon that the silence seemed out of place. Her skin felt as if it had begun to crawl. The walls felt much closer than they appeared.
She almost wished the noctowls would return. It would certainly have made her feel more at use and give a chance of redemption of her failures and screw ups before. The Type:Null was painfully aware of her lack of skill in combat. She held no grace in her movements and all she did was throw herself at the enemy with no real thought as to what could happen.
The Umbreon had wandered off in one path of two that looked almost identical. The dark type had checked back to see if she was still around and yes, she was indeed still there, though her hesitant steps had vanished. She walked with a bit more confidence to her stride, though still, she could not help but to be cautious. There were dangers in this dungeon, the noctowls had been proof of that.
They had entered the passageway to reach another section of of the library. Guess what?
More books! "Why would they need so many in one place like this...?" she spoke absentmindedly without thinking about what she had said or any potential consequence that may have come with it.

Kino
Unlike Kala, Kino was more relaxed, the darkness of the corriders being more comforting to the dark-type than scary. With the silence between her and Kala, with the little need for them to talk, the umbreon had lulled into her thoughts, letting them wander as she kept an eye on where they were headed. After all, this place was still a dungeon.
Kala's question, when they reached more books (hardly surprising), caught Kino off-guard simply because she was so absorbed in her thoughts. Nevertheless, she replied, "What, the books? It's a library, which is meant to have many books." The umbreon enjoyed books, and so she decided to give the type:null a detailed explanation. "Books are collected into libraries to make accessing a book - and therefore its contents - a lot easier, because they're all in one place."
It was only after she spoke that the shiny realized that Kala might not have directed the question at her, and might not be interested in books the way Kino was. Well, it was too late to take her words back now.
The umbreon had answered the question she had spoken aloud, though while it had answered a few it still confused her. The normal type looked to the dark type as she explained and waited for the dark type to finish speaking.
She had figured it was safe to continue speaking, as the umbreon was responding to her, "But...this place is abandoned isn't it? Left behind. Why would they leave it if it's supposed to be a place that is used?" Normally, things that get used don't get left alone to rot...don't they?
Her mind selfishly wondered if she held something in common with this library she did not know of before. Useful, yet alone. Once with a greater purpose, but now a place of tomes and tombs. Would she become like this library if she was useless to Indria after all? She doubted it, personally, but there was still that naggy little voice in the back of her mind that the scientist had planted. There were a lot of questions in life, many had an answer more pleasant than others. There were some questions that had unpleasant answers. It was always the ones that didn't have answers that bothered her.
"What If?", she had found, was easily the scariest question of all.
all the actions and reactions pinned against each other
Kino
"I... actually don't know," the umbreon replied, sweeping her gaze across the room. What exactly had happened in this library that caused it to be abandoned, leaving its wealth of knowledge to fall apart and potentially be lost for ever? In hindsight, it was actually sad to see what was probably once a magnificent place in such a decrepit state.
Well. Whatever happened, it couldn't really be changed. Kino shook herself from her musings, deciding it was necessary to focus on her surroundings in the present rather than the past, considering the dangers that lurked in the old library.
"So, do you like books?" The question that slipped out from the umbreon was rather random, the result of quick fishing for a topic of conversation. Unlike earlier, Kino was now finding herself a bit uneasy with the silence, probably because of her delve into imagining the past. Not to mention she'd put a damper on her positive mood, and so was hoping to distract herself from the melancholy that ruins sometimes brought.
The question had not surprised the null, as she had not even stopped to question whether or not it was strange. The type:null allowed the question to hang in silence as she mulled it over. Her attention had been completely diverted as her gaze was settled on the books of the library. The Type:Null stared at the book cover, one that she could not read. She finally broke the silence, "It is...interesting," she stated, "I find reading to be difficult, so what I do understand I enjoy. My master's teacher has a lot of books in her office. I tried to read many of them but all of their words were too complex and difficult for me to understand. They also lacked any imagery and told many confusing tales of impossibilities that would never occur and fake facts that seem to be meant to spread lies."
The creature had tried to read fictional books. As much as Kala liked to ask questions, she never did ask about those in particular. The teacher and the student were always so busy, she often ended up simply shutting up and doing as she was told. It would have been rude to interrupt them in their business after all.
"What about you?" she asked curiously with a glance towards the Umbreon, "If you're more affectionate towards reading, then perhaps there might be a book around here you could take interest in?"
